For those of you toying with this one, I found this on the Yahoo board. Seems like a logical notion distinguishing from the bookmark retained in flash memory versus being written to the hard disk and the author appears to have found a workaround. ..........

"One other caveat with the iPod bookmarking is that it will revert to
the previous
bookmark if it goes into "Deep Sleep" mode (which is triggered by being unused
for about 36 hours). This bites me on the weekends sometimes: I listen to my
audio book on my Friday commute home and then turn the iPod off. On Monday
the audio book starts at the same place it started on Friday (not
ended). This is
a known bug that has not been fixed yet. The work-around that works for me
is to select a different file than the audio book before turning it
off, then on Monday
select the audio book. It seems to not write the bookmark to disk, only save it
in memory, until a different file is selected"

In addition

1: Above solution -- move into menu into another selection
2. Connect iPod to Computer firewire or dock
3. Connect iPod to charger

You will also lose the bookmark if you "reset" the iPod -- which it seems to do when it goes into deep sleep.

All three solutions force the iPod to record the bookmark at the proper place.

Losing Bookmark

I seem to be losing bookmarks to my audiofiles at times. Unfortunately I haven't documented well what I have done before this happens. But at times after sleeping, I will turn the ipod on and go to the book and it will start at the beginning. A friend of mine has another device and he just clicks on something to make a bookmark. Is there any anything similar in the iPod?

Thanks

bump.

The above instructions definately seem to permanenty set the bookmarks. I have two iPods now and I have left one sit idle for two weeks and the bookmarks were retained after deep sleep.

So I'd say its probably not accurate to call it a "bug". But at the least, its a (yet) another case of inadequate documentation / instructions from Apple on how to use the iPod.
