From my knowledge there aren't too many apple branded cases. I know the 3rd gen ipod had that slip case that covered the whole ipod, which wasn't bad, but you had to take it out of the case every single time in order to use it. And I believe the video ipod has a similar case. Why doesn't apple create some nice cases such as some many of the 3rd party brands, but one that is actually good. Are there apple brand cases that I've just missed? Are they leaving that market for the other brands to profit off of? Maybe they feel people don't need one? I'm not sure, but it has puzzled me for a while now.

A case that isn't too bulky, yet it allows you to operate the ipod while in the case. I'm sure there are tons of 3rd party cases, but I don't understand why apple doesn't make their own case. With first party brand products, you are almost guaranteed of the quality, which isn't always the case with 3rd party brands.

It is Absolutley because apple is afraid that if they do... the ipod will still get scratched and they dont want u blaming it on them... if it another brand then they dont have to deal with it!!!!

I don't see why they "should" make a case. I mean, where do you draw the line with what accessories that they should and shouldn't make?

In my experience, it's a real mixed bag when it comes to accessories made by the manufacturer of the product (though Apple generally does a good job IMO).

Apple doesn't make a whole slew of accessories because they are fully committed to keeping and growing the iPod Economy that's made up of the iPod and hundreds of accessories that go along with it. Apple wants strong third-party devices and innovation that make the iPod even more desirable from a consumer stand-point. For example, I don't believe Apple makes a mic for the iPod, but I know of many people who use their iPod solely for recording. If a third-party hadn't made this accessory, the consumer could easily have bought a non-Apple mp3 player.

If Apple started encroaching on the third-party's turf, it could threaten this burgeoning economy, which is definitely advantagous for both Apple and the third-party companies. Even with something as simple as cases, Apple is best to just deal half-heartedly in the field with its tubes and socks.
