 Dropped the damn Classic in the toilet...luckily, it was pre-pee...:shake:

Got it out quickly, it was in a case, but there was water in it, it was on and it immediately crapped itself.

Dried it as well as I could, swung the water out (didn't want to shake it), made sure I didn;t turn it on, but it turned itself on and then immediately went into diagnostic mode.

I turned it off, but as I did that I got a "connect to power" icon and then it went off.

I am leaving it for a few days in rice in the airing cupboard to see if I can dry it out completely, but I don't like my chances.

Looks like I may have to claim on my insurance...dammit.

Not a happy boy.

Well, it's safely ensconced in its bowl of rice atop the hot water cylinder in the driest place in the house...at least I have my SE phone with 4gb of music on it for backup.

Grrr.....here's hoping I can rescue it and it hasn't permanently damaged it.

Not to be a Danny Doubter but I'm going to guess it's now a paper weight.

Let us know what happens. The fact that it showed anything onscreen at all is a positive sign IMO- I'm not surprised that it showed an error or diagnostic message since presumably the water is causing a short inside that prevents the iPod from working. At the same time the short may not have totally fried the motherboard or other parts.

I guess it depends on how much water made it inside, and if water also got inside the HD.

You can also pop off the back plate rather easily. There are instructions on the internet detailing this, it will not void your warranty. That way you can really dry out the iPod instead of putting it in a bag of rice. Water that is collected on the inside will not be sucked out by the rice unless the rice comes in contact with the water. Additionally, it could take weeks for the water to evaporate out of the iPod.

Take a screwdriver and gently open up your iPod to see if there is any water in it. You can also use a blow dryer (don't cook your iPod) to get any excess water out. I think your hard drive will be fine as most notebook hard drive enclosures are pretty tight. I would worry more about the main board (Apple's terminology for the iPod's motherboard) than the hard drive.

Cheers guys.

To say I am worried would be an understatement...BUT...I have insurance, so if I have to bite the bullet, "one of the kids threw it in the toilet while my back was turned"...

I'll give you all an update in a few days.

Just keep in mind that your insurance costs may increase. I don't know how things are in New Zealand but I had to file an insurance claim here in the U.S. There was a fire in the apartment next door and the smoke damaged my PDA. It was new at the time and set me back by $500 (that was back when PDAs were netbooks) when I initially purchased it. The screen was the only thing that was damaged and HP said that it would cost me about $150 to get it repaired. The insurance company said they would take care of the problem but then my monthly insurance costs increased by $2 (it is a home insurance company). It sucked but I paid an extra dollar for 2 years before the price went down. I know that it seems petty to be talking about $2 a month but that was $48 I had to pay extra. That added up to my already high home insurance costs.

Make sure that your insurance representative goes over everything before you file a claim.

Yeah, I have looked into it without being specific and my costs will remain the same, as I have my insurance through the bank that provides my mortgage, so I am considered a "High Worth Client"...thank god I have a huge mortgage!!! It's the $100.00 excess I have to pay that's going to bite.

That sucks. I wouldn't be too happy if I dropped my iPod into the toilette.

Yes....you can imagine the choice of expletives I used at the time....plunging my hand into the loo wasn't exactly my best moment either.

I once washed an iPod Nano in the laundry. After drying it, it was actually fine. Still works, years later.

That's exactly what I am hoping will be the case here...I'm just glad the toilet was clean! ;)

Not great news...several days of drying and an attempt over several hours to charge the thing have resulted in a nice silver paperweight.

Not recognised in the computer, not even charging or looking like it ever will.

I guess now it's my parts machine.

Insurance claim, here we come. :(

Update.

Took it to the local Apple certified service centre/reseller - they plugged it in, it didn;t work, they replaced it.

Excellent, Smithers.

They didn't ask any questions?
