Here are some things we need to know about the video:
1. What software did you use to make it?
2. What mpeg-4 format is the video encoded in (standard mpeg-4 or mpeg-4 AVC)?
3. What video bitrate was used?
4. What resolution was the video encoded at?
5. What audio bitrate was used?
6. What audio frequency was used (44.1KHz or 48KHz)?

iTunes can play many different types of mpeg-4 videos that are not compatible with the iPod. iTunes can playback 720p and 1080p mpeg-4 AVC baseline 1.4 videos that can't even be played using AppleTV (or the iPod). So iTunes compatibility doesn't always mean iPod compatibility.

Ahhh... I deleted it now, I don't know about the bitrate et al, and I can't check now :shake:

I didnt' encode it myself, it was already an mp4 when I downloaded it.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but what can you do to get an mp4 file to be compatible?

p.s. If it helps, I have an 80GB Classic

Right click it in iTunes, you should have the option to convert it to an iPod compatible format.

OK, I right clicked etc., and left it for several hours, came back, and found that it had gotten through about 5%. Do I just have an exceptionally slow computer, or am I missing something?

The quicktime encoder is pretty slow, so depending on the size of your video, it could take some time.

I'm having the same issue with a file I converted to "iPod Mov Mpeg4" using Total Video Converter. I have used the same program/settings to convert 6 other video files; it is only one that is having a problem.

I can load the video into iTunes with no problems, but I get the "video can't be played" message when I try to move it to the iPod. I have also tried right-clicking and selecting convert within iTunes, but it tells me the video is already in the correct format and does nothing else.

The problem video in question (this is the exact file I downloaded and converted):
http://beirutband.com/Elephant_Gun_web.mov

Any ideas? I'm running out of them.

Not all iTunes videos can be transferred to iPod. There are lots of limitations including resolution, bit rate, aspect ratio, size audio codec, and so on. You need convert them to iPod compatible video. Even you already convert your video files to iTunes compatible video MP4, MOV, M4V, sometimes you are still unable to copy them to iPod due to the false specifications output by not so professional video converters.
