I believe, since I don't have one, that the 'USB cable' is actually a USB -> iPod connector cable. That is, USB on one end, but the iPod docking connector on the other. If so, what you have above, a regular USB cable, won't work.

I understand what you're saying, and off that, does that mean I need the iPod dock if I want to use USB instead of firewire!?

no, the connection on the back of the dock is the same as the connection at the bottom of the iPod- the Apple USB 2.0 cord will work with either one.

Yeah, Didnt you know that? It the dock 40$ and comes with a cable. For 60$ you couldve upgraded. that other cable was just a converter from USB "A" to USB "B" Its used for scanners and printers usually.

No, you can connect directly to the port on the bottom. The USB cable actually has three ends. 1 USB into your PC. 1 into your ipod, and then 1 firewire end, that can connect to your adapter, so you can charge the ipod in a wall socket will it's connected to your PC.

Personally, I just bought a firewire card. You can get a cheap one for about the price of the USB cable, and it's more convenient. I think the difference in speeds is enough for me to deal w/ the extra hassle.

I'm a little confused...the Apple USB 2.0 cord connects directly to the port at the bottom of the iPod and then has both a firewire and USB 2.0 connection...not sure what you mean when you say it cannot be done.

Okey dokes - cheers for clearing that up.

I'm having enough trouble trying to understand how to upgrade my USB 1.1 to 2.0 I mean, at present I only have two ports and everything I've seen comes with 4, so I'll forget about creating a new space for a firewire (unless someone can help me out)?

Yeah...luckily I had an extra port on my PC, so aside from the 1.1 that it came with, I now have USB 2 and firewire.
