Let's discuss it! I'm downloading it right now. VERY hefty at 152.3 meg. Also very dangerous for people who have hacked phones, according to the disclaimer that comes up when you start the update.

My phone isn't hacked but I'm still crossing my fingers that nothing goes wrong...

Update applied with no issues. iPhone is working correctly and the iTunes Wi-Fi store now shows up on the home screen. Home Button Options also show up, allowing double click actions just like Touch. Not sure what else was updated...

My iPhone is unlocked (I'm in Canada) with iUnlock. Can I apply the update?

You should wait until we hear how the update reacts to an unlocked phone. The first thing you see when you go to apply the update is that the phone may become inoperable if you've unlocked it. I wouldn't take the chance until we hear about what happens to unlocked phones.

On the other discussion forums, people are reporting that their unlocked iPhones no longer work.

What other forums? I haven't seen any report of a bricked phone yet...
They are not bricked, just that the phone isn't activated anymore.

HINT: People with unlocked sims, put your AT&T sim in the iPhone before updating the phone. After the update, put your unlocked sim back in.

two websites to visit

http://www.wirelessinfo.com/content/Apple-iPhone-Firmware-1-1-1-Out.htm

but yeah seems you need the at&t sim that was sold with the phone for the restore to work

Which begs the question ..what happens 1 year down the line if you decide to ebay your iphone but upgrade to a better handet from at&t the person cant buy the phone and do restores on the handset(although after a 12 month contract you own the phone ts yours to do as you wish with) as the sim that shipped with the iphone will be required for your own personal upgrade unless at&t decide to give you another sim in which case you would have two working sims on one contract and i wouldnt give that to anyone, will be intresting to see how this pans out with the uk o2 version if the same logik is applied since (im only guesing on the usa upgrade option) in the uk when you upgrade you keep your sim that comes with your origional handset (ie iphone) then when you get the upgrade you put it in your new handset mmm hope you guys understand what i mean.

Looks like your custom ringtones get wiped out as well with this new update (if you are using the ringtones hack with iTunes 7.4 or 7.4.1)

Non-third party iTune ringtones were wiped out with the update previous to this one.

The new update looks great. The iTunes wifi store is great, very slick, clean and easy to use. They need to allow you to add credit on the go though. Could have something to do with them fearing that people will be adding credit to their phones by shoplifting gift card numbers in stores, but I thought you had to activate them at the register.

So if you have 3rd party apps but not a hacked sim the phone will update and not be bricked. You just lose all of the apps. Is that right?

I can't wait to make use of all the new features with this update. Hopefully the ipod quitting while using safari bug is fixed. I am overjoyed to hear there are a few new tricks to manipulate your ipod now too.

Agreed. The double click Home button is a nice upgrade. It makes the iPod functions a lot easier to control. Not sure where we are with Safari stability. I do know that I had the iTunes Wi-Fi Store dump me out to the home screen once so it's got some stability issues apparently.

I was getting not only Safari quits but also quits during Google Maps and YouTube...an increasing number of quits. I resored the iPhone and I have ceased getting quits (that was when I was running 1.0.1 or 1.0.2, I don't remember). When I updated to 1.1.1, I got an error that this iPhone couldn't be updated, that it needed to be restored (no hacks applied nor unlocking, just the standard apps that came with the phone and AT&T service). It's almost done re-syncing (had to re=sync all the songs and such from scratch), then I'll see if it's functional.

EDIT: Restore completed, everything looks good with 1.1.1

This is a good update, if not breathtaking.

1) I'm not sure if this is something included in the update that no one has mentioned, or just something that's always been there that I didn't notice before, but in Safari, if you've scrolled down the web page, you can tap on the status bar at the top, and it will jump back to the start of the page. This is handy if you want to type in a new URL or do a new search without having to flick up a bunch.

2) I have the Apple Bluetooth headset, and the improvements in the new update are very cool. I love seeing the battery status in the status bar. Before, you could see it while it was charging in the dock with the iPhone (as you still can), but that was essentially useless because the iphone would shut off before the battery status would show, so you had to turn the iphone back on just to see the headset battery status. Seeing the battery all the time in the status bar is a big help.

3) I love the Wifi iTunes store.

4) I also love the new double-Home tap option, but I would like to see one improvement. When the phone is locked (where you need to use the slider), doing the double-tap will bring up the audio controls whether or not music is playing. I have my Home button set to take me to Phone Favorites if music is not playing and music controls if it is playing. So, if the phone is locked, I would like to have a double-tap also take me to Phone Favorites - this would be very convenient, especially when driving.

5) The Blackberry-esque double-space=period option is cool, but I'll need to keep reminding myself to do it.

I just downloaded this software upgrade, and I think it messed up my phone, even though I have never tried to hack into my iphone, because I was scared of messing it up. All it does now is show a black screen with a yellow exclamation mark that says "please connect to iTunes". But when I plug it into my computer, nothing happens. Any advice? Am I missing something here?
