Even though I agree with him, how insulting to Touch buyers is it that Steve Jobs said this:

“Well, one’s a phone, and one’s not. The iPod touch is training wheels for the iPhone.”

at the UK event yesterday (see iLounge front page for details).

I guess my assessment of the Touch as "iPhone Neuter" is now supported by Apple's CEO. What a shame. It just goes to show that what many of us have been saying for a long time now is true: iPod Touch is not a priority for Apple. It's a great disappointment since Touch had so much potential.

It is very disturbing to see the Apple CEO treat the device that gave Apple it's biggest boost this decade as 'training wheels' for their new phone business.

Sad sad sad.

It's not insulting to me at all. I know what im getting before I buy it. It's like having a Mustang and seeing other people with a Mustang GT - sometimes you kinda wish you'd have the GT, but then you remember how much more gas it uses and how much more you have to pay (at&t contract :)).

Not really. It's more like you have a Mustang GT with half of the engine parts removed and a hole where the radio is supposed to go.

You're seriously looking for any reason to bash the Touch, aren't you? My reference makes more sense, yours is just hating.

I love how the pat reply to anyone who's critical is "You're just looking to bash for no reason". You're wrong about that. iPod Touch is a deeply flawed product. Sorry you can't see that fact. Doesn't make me a basher. More like a realist. Besides, I could be just as insulting and say that you're a "blind Apple fanboy" but I don't. Know why? Because I don't play those stupid games.

Given the specs, what else could it be? Future gens probably will strengthen and possibly even differentiate the touch as its own beast, but as of now, Apple is clearly intending this as a novelty based hobby horse.

Even the time scale for things like the Starbucks implementation say two things clearly: One, we're going slow enough so that if that if thing flops, we won't have much invested. Two, we're going slow enough so that if this thing doesn't flop, it will actually be of age before we've invested much.

Three generations from now when Apple has solidified wi-fi integration with the platform, solidified their smartphone presence, and they've had enough time to try some different interface tweaks, expect to hold greatness in your grubby mitts. For now, consider yourselves to be the current day equivalent of one of those people crazy enough to drop $500 on a first gen iPod with barely any support at all.

I do consider the display a flaw, obviously. It will be fixed. Im fine with people being critcal, it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you hate it so much, what are you doing on this forum? Go over the the iPhone forum. Provide some valid reasons for the iPod touch being "flawed".

You sure rack up a lot of posts in the iPod touch forum for a guy who doesn't own one and has no interest in owning one.

I have done so already. Evidently I'm not supposed to do that though. Judging by your post I'm supposed to go away because you disagree with my assessment. Way to keep an open mind.
Well go ahead and repeat them for me please. I clearly haven't seen them.

Translation: The iPod Touch is great but we've cut out enough stuff that once you fully immerse yourself in it then you'll realize how much is missing. And when that happens, we'll be there ready to take another $400 from you.

BTW, the UK announcement is pretty disappointing for those out there. They've been wired up for 3G for a while but the iPhone-UK is EDGE. And out there EDGE only has a 30% coverage so in order to use it then the carriers will have to install a downgraded infrastructure for their $539(US) iPhone. Ouch.

seriously, look who's talking.

Please. I never resort to such transparent tactics. I stand behind my posts, when people agree with them and when they don't/

But let's take a look at this particular thread. What's happening here? People disagree with my viewpoint but rather than make a reasonable rebuttal, they choose to attack my character. That shows weakness on their (your) part. It's a rote tactic that people who have no rebuttal use all the time. They attempt to short circuit legitimate conversation by refocusing the dialogue on the poster, not the post. Exactly the sort of lame thing that's been happening ever since Internet message boards were invented. When people start doing that stuff, it's obvious that my point is made. If it wasn't, there'd be substantive replies.

I don't know if it's that calculated. More like "iPhone isn't doing as well as we expected. Rush out a simplified version without the phone so we can recoup our losses quicker."
