I have a 5th generation ipod. I use it only for listening to podcasts that I download as mp3 files that I then convert to podcasts when I synch it with Itunes. Often files show up on my device that dont show up when I use Itunes. Sometimes I go into the Ipod through window explorer and delete these files. What I notice though is that there are numerous files in here that dont exist on my Ipod or in Itunes. They are old podcasts that Ive heard before but were never deleted from the device through Itunes. How do I get rid of these files and only keep the ones the ones that are currently playing on Itunes.

You would manage the podcasts through iTunes (various ways). I refuse to use iTunes for Podcasts so my knowledge may be out of date.

There was the option to click on the device, then click on the Podcast section and see all the episodes.
You can there remove episodes as needed, or set the feed up to automatically delete played episodes.

Here are some tips with a Mac

Here are some tips for Windows

When the Podcasts app no longer supported smart playlists, I was done with Apple's 2 stage podcast management (1. Download to PC, 2. Sync to device).

With the iPod Classic, you are stuck with iTunes. Check the drop down menu at the top of iTunes to switch to Podcast view, and you can manage the subscriptions and episodes.
