I'm from Glasgow, in Scotland, and saw a great new band last week - they are called The Ads and have a really great sound. Really funky alternative rock - great bass riffs and tunes. They say on their website that their main influences include the Pixies and you can really hear this in their music.
Their website is;

Let me know what you think - hope you like it as much as I do!

First, let me say, GREAT THREAD. Now, a couple of things about some of the stuff I've read.

First and foremost, the phrases "sound like Jimi Hendrix", and "plays like SRV" are thrown around WAY too much.

a few of my favorites:

Keller William-incridible live show
O. A. R.-good stuff(@ the moment my favorite cd "Anytime Now" disc II
Phish
String Cheese Incident
Widespread Panic-I havent listened much but like what I have heard
Doesn't Taylor make a Keller Williams guitar?

It's too late to see Phish, but when Panic tours again, GO SEE THE SHOW!
Now, I'm no Spread Head, but it's the best show I've ever seen. You are part of it when you're there. I'm telling you that there is nothing like it. Every show is a sellout, and every soul in the building is dancing. You will NEVER go to a show with that much energy, especially not with the Dead and Phish gone.

I don't even particularly like to listen to the cd's, especially not the studio versions. It doesn't capture what they're about. The bootlegs are good though, especially if you've been to a show. You can almost see it when listening.

String Cheese is getting some play on XM. I used to see them play a good bit in Auburn. Tdub, I think we'd get along kindly;)

Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen are 2 of the best living guitar soloists. I don't think they qualify here as unknowns. The fact that they don't head a famous band is the only reason normal people may not know who they are. There are like a million albums between them though, and Steve Vai has won a Grammy before.

A good young guitar god in the making is Derek Trucks. He too has been getting some play on XM lately. Excellent slide player, played with Gov't Mule and The Allman Brothers, and now the Derek Trucks band. I wouldn't say that he's unheard of though, I've seen him in lots of magazine articles, he just wasn't mentioned in the thread.

I wish I had something local to add, but we haven't had any good bands come around lately. Huntsville Alabama isn't much of a music scene.

A Dozen Furies
Some people may know about these guys as they won MTV's Battle For Ozzfest.
They are SOOOO awesome! I saw them live in January and even thought the club's sound stuff was messing up they were AMAZING! They come from Plano, TX (where I live:D [In fact if I wanted to I could walk to their apartments right now:D])

Matthew Good. Yeah, he's on a major label, but has only had exposure in Canada.

His album Avalanche is simply breathtaking, and it's up for download iTunes Canada.

Other than that, Limblifter, Age of Electric and the New Pornographers, all great bands out of Vancouver. Funny thing is, they've all had the same drummer at one point or another.

I "discovered" Loquat about 4-5 years ago on a free mp3 website (I can't remember which site, but it was a lot like Epitonic... unless it *was* Epitonic... hmmm...). They were more trip hoppy back then, but now their sound is more indie pop with beautiful, swirly instrumentation and sweet, dreamy female vocals. After downloading and falling in love with their mp3s, I ended up buying one of their EPs, and every time I play it around people, I get asked "Who is that?"

One of their mp3s can currently be downloaded from http://www.epitonic.com/artists/loquat.html ("Swingset Chain" -- gorgeous, gorgeous track). You can also stream some of their other tracks at loquatmusic.com, but they're not available for download.

They finally came out with an full-length album earlier this year (which I haven't heard... I don't think it's available in the U.S. yet), but what I'm REALLY excited about is that they're playing in L.A. this week. I will definitely be there!

The Tragically Hip.

They're big in Canada, but no one I've met in the states knows who they are.

Holiday With Maggie

http://www.purevolume.com/holidaywithmaggie

three of their songs are available here and a couple others are up for download on their website. They're an alternative rock/emo type band but "the Great Northern" is just plain beautiful-no matter what type of music you're into you'll most likely appreciate it.
