I recently decided to re-rip my CD collection as lossless files. So far I've only done about 40 discs out of 500. Yesterday I picked up an 80GB iPod. I want to keep a lossless copy of each track in my main library, but use 192Kbps AAC on the iPod. I'm not sure what the best method is since iTunes stupidly does not support transcoding tracks on the fly for anything other than the shuffle.

What option do you recommend?
  • Storing copies of both the lossless and AAC tracks in one library, using Smart Playlists to manage them.
  • Using an app such as Libra to create a separate library for the AAC tracks.
  • Another method which you may recommend
Method one doesn't appeal to me although I would retain my current playlists, play counts, etc. Method two seems better, but how does the iPod determine which iTunes library to open? Does it only open which one was last active? I tired an AppleScript to convert lossless files to AAC and then copy them to the iPod, but that only seemed to cause problems. Help!
