When playing songs in alphabetical order, it is more than likely to have more than one copy of a song. Just picture having an album by a band, then a best of and also a compilation of various artists. Each of those albums having the same track, so now you have three copies of that track.

What I want is not to delete the duplicate tracks, as I would still like them to show in album view, but I would just like iTunes to detect that the song has just been played and not play it two more times.

Any suggestions on how to do this?

cheers

Uncheck the songs you don't want played. Then iTunes will skip over them.

You can choose which version to hear this way too.

Cheers, but with over 25,000 songs, this is not a feasible solution. Surely there must be either a workaround or a 3rd party app that is smarter and can achieve this. it kind of seems a no brainer, but with iTunes, that never eventuates

Thanks for the reply

I am sure you can remember the duplicate songs and find them readily. You can't have that many duplicate songs.

You said you wanted to keep the tracks and not play them, so your best option is to uncheck them.

You can reduce the number to search through by using File->Library->Show Duplicates and then do your check mark removal. Click the Done button in the top right to turn off the duplicates view.

The only other option is to create playlists without the duplicates and listen to those.
