Lately I have been getting a lot of SPAM directly on my iPhone using Apple's Mail application. However, when I keep them unread, and turn on my PC, open up my email client, these emails never appear. How is that possible? And what can I do on my phone to minimize this if at all.

I was always under the impression that my email on my iphone should be identical to what's on my PC.

It depends on the software on your PC. Some applications like Outlook have Junk Mail settings that will clear spam automatically on start up. I have my Outlook at work set to move all messages in my inbox to junk if they are not in my address books since I used to get 50-100 spam messages a day.

The downside of Outlook doing this is that the email provider does not learn that these are spam messages. If the email provider has spam filtering, you would need to use their webmail interface to select all the Junk messages and report them as spam. That teaches the provider that these are spam and they will start filtering them for you.

If the provider is filtering then email should be the same between the devices.

Well if the ISP or email provider was doing the spam filtering, the messages would be the same on the PC and phone.

Thunderbird does have Junk filtering as well. You can send the messages to the Junk folder on the account, or delete them automatically. My Thunderbird is set to delete. I probably should change that. So if you have told Thunderbird that the casino email (as an example) is junk, it will always clean out email from that entity.

You would think they should be the same. I can open Mail on iphone, and see messages that are present on my phone, and simultaneously open Tbird, and they are not present.

On a side note- unrelated. I made a Smart Playlist in Itunes for an artist. It works in iTunes on my PC. I synced my iTunes and iPhone. The playlist isn't on my phone, still on my PC.

Why does this happen? There's nothing intuitive here. In fact, as I look, quite a few playlists on my PC, made within iTunes, are not on my phone.

Never mind I figured out the playlist issue. I had in iTunes the feature Sync Entire Music Library NOT selected, and thus the new playlists I just created did not create.

I had this feature selected to prevent an additional 60 gigs of music from transferring over from PC to iphone. I don't know if there's a better way to prevent those 60gigs of files from coming over or not?

That would be because Thunderbird is processing your inbox as it is opening, and moving/deleting the messages that is sees as junk. I would be willing to bet if you opened your inbox with webmail, the spam would be there and be identical to your phone.

On the playlist issue, syncing selected is the only way to keep the other 60GB off of the phone. This is the method I use as well. And you answered your on question on the playlists as well.

For others reading this, selecting these playlists as playlists that will be synced from iTunes to the device. Click on the device in iTunes. Click on the Music section in the left column, scroll through the playlists in the right side of iTunes, put check marks next to the playlists you want to sync, then click Apply at the bottom right.

No, the playlist will remain on the phone and get synced to iTunes and be checked automatically.

Thanks- the reason I ask, is before I updated the iOS I made a playlist on the phone only. Then I updated the iOS, then I downloaded my songs to PC, then I synced with iTunes.
At that point I checked my phone and the original playlist was still on the phone. BUT all the songs previously on the playlist before I updated the iOS/added my songs disappeared from the playlist- not sure why.

I guess iTunes didn’t get that playlist backed up with songs. Probably the the error 4000 made the backup fail and only get the playlist.

Since your restore was screwed up by the Apple Music subscription, erasing all your music, when you recovered from iTunes, you got the empty playlist.

Thats what I was wondering too. Thanks- Ill
Make the list, and if it doesn’t work after sync I’ll report back.

For some reason/s with my ipods I thought the communication was only one way - from
pc to Apple player, assumed the same for iPhone too. That wouldn’t be too user friendly but when did that ever stop Apple hah.

The age of the iPods determines the interaction level.
Older iPods limited based on my 5th gen Nano, to adding songs to an On-The-Go playlist, which is not synchronized with iTunes.
The 6th gen Nano could create new playlists and they do get synced to iTunes.
