So, any suggestions on a clear film protector for the screen ONLY of the iPod Classic? ScreenGuardz perhaps? I'm getting a SENA case for the iPod itself but I want a screen protector that only covers the screen itself, not the entire front face of the iPod.

Ideas?

Screenguardz all the way. I ordered the protectors for the 5G, so I can't say how the new Classic protectors are cut, but the older versions seem to be deliberately oversized since the older iPods didn't have a separate screen piece. Now that the screen is sunk a bit, I had to do some trimming for a perfect fit, but it's working great. I love the fact that they include 15 in a pack considering the fact that I wasted 3 before I got a perfect cut.

The directions say to apply it dry, but I sprayed it with some Windex to have it slide, then used the included squeegee to get the bubbles out. Worked like a charm, nobody that I show my iPod to can tell there's a screen protector on.

If Apple really made the screen of the Classic optical grade glass, then I think screen protectors are probably superfluous.

The crystals of my G-Shock watches have always been glass, and they've never been scratched.

So, FWIW, I just installed the InvisibleShield on the screen of my 6G Classic and it's awesome! I'm very pleased with how easy it was to install and how good it looks (practically invisible, as per the name of the product). Highly recommended in combination with a nice case. I'm using the SENA dockable case with mine and it's fantastic combo.

Since the new classics have less stratchy faceplates I'm considering a BSE screencover. The back was already scratched by migrating butterlies in the sahara desert. However I now wonder if the screen is indeed mostly unscratchable like my watch.

Was the comment about optical grade glass a fact or wish?

Well, according to AppleInsider, the pros of the Classic are:

Pros

* Much greater capacity than other iPods.
* Longer batter life than other iPod models.
* Scratch resistant metal face and glass screen.
* Enhanced animated menus and Coverflow.
* Three free games.
