• With the number of recent threads from brand new users that we have observed in our Classifieds forum selling goods under questionable circumstances, we have instituted a new policy restricting new members of iLounge from posting new threads in the Classifieds forum until they have reached "Regular Member" status.

New users become Regular Members once they have made 10 posts and been a member of the iLounge Forums for at least 7 days. Prior to this time, members may still read the Classifieds forum, and even respond to existing threads for items being sold by other members, but they may not create new threads advertising their own items for sale.

This will hopefully help to protect our user community by discouraging fraudulent users from signing up and posting classified ads without having at least a very basic level of established membership in our forums.

Obviously all users should still exercise due diligence when making use of our classifieds forums, but we hope that this restriction will help to decrease the number of blatantly fraudulent ads that we have been seeing in recent weeks.

Please be sure to review our Classified Forum Policy for more information.

So far it sounds like I can upgrade my iPhone to the 3G since there won't be a new iPhone but only an upgrade in software - June. I've been holding off from upgrading thinking that a new iPhone might be in the works for June. Seems like it won't be.

Original iPhone users will not be getting all the new features. Apple has already said that MMS and stereo Bluetooth music playback will not be available, although there could be many more not yet announced.

From CNET so yes there will be new hardware and owners of the first and second generation iPhone will not get everything.

Uh... all 3 of you are like.. wrong.
By what I recall the first 20 minutes were kinda boring. It got better after the app demoes (which were bore-me-to-death slow). Matter of opinion though.
This doesn't mean there won't be new hardware. Everyone expects Apple to release a new iPhone in June-July, and it's half-guaranteed.
There actually was MMS and A2DP there, and Apple never confirmed such rumors.

Well, it's a major update, no matter how you slice it. So many new, useful features are in the OS that it makes iPhone what it really should have been on the day they first released it. It's awesome that they're making this backward compatible with the 3G and mostly backward compatible with the first gen iPhone. Very cool of Apple to do that.

As far as new hardware goes, I don't recall anything in the conference that suggested new hardware isn't in the pipeline. I think it's safe to assume that Apple will crank out new iPhone hardware once a year for the foreseeable future. They want people stuck in the constant upgrade path and they want to make sure that there's a new phone out WELL before everyone's two year contracts with ATT expire. Seems to me that the very longest we'd have to wait for new hardware would be about 18 months from the last release, but I think one year is a lot more likely.

Another thing to consider: Steve Jobs is supposed to rejoin the company in June. The new iPhone OS is supposed to hit right around then too. Is it too wild to speculate that a new phone and/or a tablet device might be released by Jobs himself upon his return? I don't think so.

Read CNET, NO MMS or stereo bluetooth on iPhone G1 and G2
That's incorrect. Both those features will be available on the current 3G phone. They were very clear about that in the press conference. Even the article you linked to says so:

"Original iPhone users will not be getting all the new features. Apple has already said that MMS and stereo Bluetooth music playback will not be available. "

"Original iPhone" = G1 only, not G1 and G2.

Thanks Surf, spared me a few sentences.

And yeah, it's a major update, agreed. But it has absolutely nothing innovative, this was just Apple playing catch-up. Not that I'm not glad they did, though. NOW we can truly name the iPhone as the most advanced phone out there. The only thing visibly missing is OBEX.

It's awesome that they're making this backward compatible with the 3G and mostly backward compatible with the first gen iPhone. Very cool of Apple to do that.
I don't know if it's the "Jobs effect" or the "Apple effect", but either way, it's amazing how Apple can deprive us of features/updates long enough for us to be amazed by the barebones updates. It would've been immensely stupid not to give 2G users all the features they can get, especially since most firmware updates are free at any rate, and they're already charging for the iPod touch. All I know at the moment is that I'll have all (or at least most) new features the next iPhone has, and I'm glad about that. At this point I think the only major thing they can add to the next-gen iPhone is an updated camera (and a matte back for crying out loud - that alone would probably get me to buy it), aside from the normal upgrades like battery and storage.

You're right about the update not being revolutionary. It's dead obvious that it's a "catch up" release. It seems pretty clear that what happened is that they rushed the phone out the door before the OS was fully ready. We knew that the day the original iPhone was released. Now we have an OS that does everything they probably thought it would from the beginning.

However, there IS one area where the OS could cause a revolution and that's connection to external devices via either the iPod dock connector or by Bluetooth. Having seamless integration with the phone means that all sorts of things can now have iPhone graphical interfaces. Refrigerators, security systems, home theaters and so forth and so on. This opening up of the interoperability of the iPhone is a major step by Apple, even if it seems minor on the surface. Remember the picture of the blood pressure cuff with an iPhone plugged into it? That sort of thing could become commonplace and would be highly useful.

I liked how devices can be paired with iPhone. At least Apple is hearing out our cries and now, iPhone is the most advanced smartphone when June or July comes.

I think their next iPhone will just sport some aesthetic change down the line. I wish it would be more light, thinner, and shave some dimensions off without touching the gorgeous screen.

As I've said in other posts, Apple can achieve 10 hours on a 72mAh battery on iPod shuffle, what more with a 2kmAh on the current iPhone's battery if the same hardware design is implemented.

And by the way... to everyone who claimed Cut/Copy/Paste would never come...

Yeah.
I think it was pretty clear that it would come, just that it was a not top priority for Apple. That has been shown.
I was suprised that they bothered with a mechanism for Text Forwarding. I thought they would of just let copy/paste handle that.

But MMS? I thought they might hold out. But maybe the carriers were looking to make a few extra bucks. I will be very interested to see how the plan prices change once MMS is "real". I just hope that if it is more, that it's optional. It's certainly something I've never wanted, or needed.

So what do we moan about now? Oh yeah. No video........ or is there...?

I'd bet on Apple adding video to the next iPhone, the one likely to be announced in June. Along with 32GB (8GB discontinued, probably), and a much better battery along with a matte back. Video won't be a part of the previous iPhones. Camera ain't good enough anyway, I don't mind much. The only thing really missing from the iPhone now is OBEX. They implement that (for photos at the very least), and it's definitely the most advanced smartphone out there. Flash is coming, to those of you who'd like to tell me it still needs it to gain that naming. And while they're at it, give us voice dialling and (correct!) timestamps on each SMS message. Those are my only complaints for the iPhone now, and Bluetooth OBEX comes first. The rest will most probably be added down the line (through a free software update) but we have no guarantees for the Bluetooth.

Edit: Throw in Wi-Fi syncing while you're at it. Wouldn't mind that wireless charging the Pre's got either.
