I have an old iPod Touch 2nd Generation. I use it for listening to podcasts. I use an old version of iTunes because read that my iPod will not work with newer versions of iTunes.

I need to either find another podcast app or buy a new mobile device because I have not been able to download some podcasts in the last few years. I assume the problem is due to the fact that I'm using an old version of iTunes. In addition, it may not be secure using an old version of iTunes. Would I be able to use another podcast app, other than iTunes, with my old iPod Touch or do I need to get a new device?

I haven't found that new versions of iTunes stop supporting old devices. Generally the old devices still work. Using the latest iTunes to access an iPod Color. You could probably upgrade iTunes.

My guess is your podcasts are in the iTunes Store, and the iTunes Store is preventing old iTunes from accessing the feed. This is definitely something that can happen.

If you used a direct link to a podcast, you could keep the old iPod and old iTunes. If you want to use the iTunes Store links you will need to update iTunes.

I don't think you need to replace the device.

Thanks. Will another podcast app work with my iPod or only iTunes?

I doubt there will be new apps available for that old of iOS. You could look to see if there are any. I use Overcast myself.

I guess you can't use Overcast for podcasts, right? I was wondering about apps like Pocketcasts or Stitcher.

I use Overcast for getting podcasts. I think I tried Stitcher and didn't like it, don't remember why. Never tried Pocketcasts that I am aware of.

I stopped using Apple's Podcasts app once they stopped supporting smart playlists.

So, can I use Overcast? If so, can I download podcasts to my iPod from my PC with a USB cable? I don't have WiFi.

I misnamed the app, it is Overcast.

If you don't have WiFi, you are stuck downloading with iTunes (hard wired I assume) and then sync with your iPod Touch and use the iTunes Podcasts app.
