Last night was a stirring moment as Glen Hansard (lead singer of The Frames) and Marketa Irglova accepted the Oscar for best song, from the movie "Once". As Hansard explained in the acceptance speech, this was a little project done with Handycams and a (relatively) small budget, and they never expected it to come to be any big deal. The mic was cut off before Marketa had a chance to talk, and even though they'd been cutting people off all night, they even let her come back and talk, and what she had to say was wonderful:

The movie was about Hansard & Irglova getting together to record an album, and falling in love but then going separate ways. I'm not sure how much was fiction, since they actually did get together and record an album, and reportedly did fall in love.

The name of that album is The Swell Season

This is a wonderful album, the music that won the Grammy. I highly recommend it! There is a soundtrack album as well, but this is the real original album, not bits snipped from a movie...plus the soundtrack is sold by Columbia, so most of the money will end up in the hands of guys who never had anything to do with the movie or the original album.
