I have a little over 6000 songs on Itunes 12.3.3.17. Yesterday I noticed many (over 400) were missing or could not be located. The little exclamation point to the left of the song indicated this. So I spent considerable amount of time finding the songs online and replacing them. I added maybe 20 songs. Today they are all back. Nothing has changed in my library except the 20 or so songs I added. Is there an explanation for this? Is this a corrupt program?

Thanks
Mark

That sounds like a hard disk problem to me. Your drive may be dying. See if you have any errors in your event log discussing the health of your drive.

Make a backup, if you don't have one. I usually recommend Spinrite for drive health, even though the current version can't be run on my main iTunes system (need version 6.1 to finally come out).

thanks
Would you be able to tell me if my event logs show that I have a problem on the horizon. I am unsure about what to look for.
Thanks

In the event log there will be errors like "bad block" or "driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk3\DR3" where the numbers could be different.

You could just run Spinrite on the drive to resolve current issues (level 2 for SSD, level 4 for HDD).

Open the event log and see if there are recent errors.

I don't think I have enough experienced to find these details. I looked under window logs, with the sub headings of Applications, Security , Setup, and system. I could not find any with information that you suggested. I assume I am looking in the right place?

What I do is open Event Viewer and go into Windows Logs, then System.
Then I click the top bar in the Level column to sort by level. That way all the criticals and errors are at the top.

Then I look at the source column for Disk those are hard drive errors. Since it is sorted by Level, the dates are out of order. It should not take long to scroll through all the errors.

The critical errors for the User-mode Driver problems may be an out of date USB driver. Though this is not the hard drive problems I was referring to. You may want to update the Chipset drivers to see if that helps get rid of those.

The Kernel Power ones are typically improper shutdowns.

Hard drive issues would be "Error" not "Critical", scroll farther down.

The Disk 11 errors are worrisome. Those seem to be controller errors. So your data may or may not be read from or written to disk. Double clicking one of those lines should tell you which device number it is.

You can figure out which one is by looking at Disk Management in Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management /Device/Harddrive0/DR0 would be the first partition of Disk 0.

The Disk 51 is also trouble because your system got an error paging a memory segment from a running program. The more of these you get, the more crashes you'll see.

Time to get your disk controller replaced and verify the data on your hard drives are intact. These disk errors may be why you had so many kernel-power errors above.

I was reading more about locating lost files and found that there seems to be two locations for my music . If you get a chance can you take a look at these locations?
Lost files
file://localhost/C:/Users/NewPC/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/Unknown Artist/Unknown Album/Keren 2.mp3

Found files
C:\Users\NewPC\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\Unknown Artist\Unknown Album\sweet talkin guy.mp3

These are different locations right?

Thanks

Technically those are the same folder. Two different files.

The first one is a network access like iTunes would do.
The second one looks like a normal path from Windows Explorer

so that wouldn't have anything to do with not being able to find one or the other?

what is an ASX file? I notice that a number of songs have this extension instead of mp3 in itunes.

No I would think iTunes could use either path to get to the files. I can't be 100% sure though.

ASX files are Windows Media Meta files. Advanced Stream Redirector files that provide information about other files. They could be playlists as well as presentation directives. ASX file extension - Open, play .asx files
