I recently bought an Ipod, G3 20gb. I am using Windows 98 and have gone down the MacOpener Ephpod route as v2.0.1 of the firmware proved impossible to find.

Almost everything seems to work fine, I can transfer songs, the thing charges, it gets a driver letter in explorer and I can see the files.

The only thing I am missing is the "Safely Disconnect Hardware" icon in my taskbar.

I believe that Windows 2000 / XP need no extra drivers for external devices such as card reader, usb disks etc, but Windows 98SE usually does, am I in need of an extra driver or something to get this working?.

Without it all I get is the "Do Not Disconnect" message on the Ipod, if I disconnect it tells me off, if I shut down and restart with it connected I can disconnect without the message.

Any ideas?..

OK, a couple of things.

First off check out the Win98SE sticky. I've updated it. It turns out the 2.1 Updater is available on the Apple CD in uncompressed format, so you can copy it to your PC and use it with your iPod.

So, that'll let you format your iPod as a WiPod, uninstall MacOpener and use the WiPod version of ephpod (or any other uploading program).

Regarding the message--you might want to download and install the firewire patch. I know you're on USB, but I believe that patch also adds the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature.

Hi,

Thanks for the tips.

I am using Firewire and did the Microsoft update before I installed the card. It all appears to work fine, no exclaimation marks in device manager etc.

I found this

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;242975&Product=w98

on the Microsoft site and hopefully it will restore the icon. I remember something about newer file versions when I first plugged the Ipod in so this will hopefully resolve things.

I am going to have a dig around on the CD like the sticky said, can't do it until Friday. Will wait to see how other people go with it first before trying it.

In theory I should be able to install the software without the ipod connected which will prove if he updater can be loaded.

Would be nice to be able to do the windows restore an save $30 on MacOpener. Having tried MusicMatch independant of Ipod before though there is no way I'm using it. Will use Ephpod again.

Cheers
