i needed to free up some space on my hard drive, so i figured i'd dump some of my music; i never listen to it on the computer, only on my iPod, and it was taking up a good chunk of my storage. I dumped about half of my music. Unfortunately, I forgot to plug in my iPod and set it to manual sync so it wouldn't delete the songs from my iPod. So my question is, is there a way to set the iPod to manual sync without plugging in my iPod to do it? If I plug it in and the songs get deleted from my iPod, then i am screwed. Please help

Hold down the shift key when opening up iTunes and keep it held down. iTunes will then ask you where you want to create a new library on your harddrive. Choose a name and location for the folder of the new libary. When iTunes opens up, you'll have a new library without any files. Hook your iPod up. It will come up with a message alerting you that the iPod is synced to another library. DO NOT SYNC TO THIS LIBRARY! By declining to sync, the iPod will be put into manual mode. You can now close out of iTunes, delete the NEW folder you created (not the old one) and re-launch iTunes. iTunes will default back to your old library and you can now hook up your iPod. It will open in manual mode and you can manage it as such.

The declining of the sync usually only puts the iPod into a temporary manual sync. Make the actual change in the settings.

Alternatively link in my sig for a way to temporarily disable autosync.
