I did try to search for a post with info on this topic but my circumstances are a bit different from the results I found.

I had to reformat and reinstall my OS (XP). I keep all of my music files on a seperate drive- so losing those files is not an issue. I reinstalled iTunes last night- I have NOT connected my iPod to my computer yet. I want to avoid my iPod getting wiped (I manually update). How should I proceed in order to recover my playlists etc. (All of my old data was saved- so I have the playlists- somewhere)

You just need to ensure iTunes isn't running, that the drive letter of the drive where your music files is the same as it was before you formatted, and then replace the iTunes Music Library.itl and .xml files which will have been created by your new iTunes installation (usually in My Music>iTunes).
