Hi,

Whenever I use iTunes my computer will completely freeze - mouse immobile, no hard drive motion, etc. It doesn't matter if I have my iPod connected or not. Sometimes it'll work for an hour, and other times I only get to run iTunes for about 30 seconds before it freezes. It also seems to freeze more often whenever it's doing anything with the iPod - synching tracks, playing music from it, etc.

I've been through tech support with my PC, with HP for the iPod hardware, with Apple for the iTunes software, while each blames the other (HP: There may be a compatibility problem with something on your system and iTunes. Contact Apple. Apple: There's probably a hardware problem. Contact HP).

I know I'm not alone in this, vis-a-vis these threads:

(and those are just the more recent posts)

I'd like to know if anyone had this problem and found a solution.

BTW: I'm running Windows XP SP1 with all of the latest patches. No viruses. Spyware removed. Etc. I have an HP laptop and have tried four of the Recommended PC Card adapters from Apple's support site (those that are supposed to work with the iPod) but even on my PC's built-in USB or through a powered hub iTunes still freezes - of course, iTunes will freeze even if I'm just editing ID3 tags and have no external devices attached, too, so Apple blaming the USB or a cable problem is just absurd.

I'm using XPlay 2 and have not had one problem filling my 40Gb iPod. No freezes, no crashes, no problems whatsoever. So Apple blaming my hardware is a friggin' joke.

But I'd like to be able to manage my library from a single program - XPlay is great for dragging individual files to the iPod but I have a 200Gb load of mp3s - so I can't even do folder-level synching because I don't want to synch my entire library into the iPod - just a select 30Gb or so at a time.

I have a huge problem I just bought a Windows XP was running itunes 6, first I transfered my ipod to itunes, then a day later I updated my itunes to 7.(bad move) Since then my computer recognizes the ipod and works like it should except it freezes up my computer every single time. I have restored, reconfigured it, uninstalled both ipod and itunes many times. It resets everything and then when I go to put my music on the ipod it, it works up until I reach about a hundred songs. After that itunes freezes my computer. I've even tried to do each song manuely and the same thing right around 100 or so songs will copy on to my ipod and then the freeze. Please help I've tried everything I know.

One more thing when I do this a default box comes up with the red X and says itunes exe drive not ready check \device\harddisk1\DR4 check drive as the door might not be closed all the way.

please help I have had a rough time with my ipod, I was using a windows on another computer when I first got my ipod to put all my songs on but then it crashed on me. I did an update and got about half my music on there when I bought my new computer and now I have about 100 songs and can't get my library on my ipod. I have spent many hours trying many different things but I can't seem to get this working

I had the freezing problem with both 4.6 and 4.7 - I was hoping the upgrade would solve the problem, but alas.

I have nothing against WMP 10, but it's not as convenient to use to sync with the iPod, and the Library feature is awful for mass editing tags and seeing your entire collection at a glance.

So yes, with XPlay I can get music into my iPod, but it doesn't have a library feature for managing music on my computer or for easy synching to the iPod (it's synchronization tool only allows you to select files on a folder-by-folder basis, and doesn't have a library for quickly scanning what is and isn't prepped for synching).

It's not that I expect Apple to fix iTunes for Windows - it would just be nice for them to acknowledge there's a problem.

Well, I rip at a really high bitrate, and I never throw away anything. You never know when you may want to listen to some Steve Miller Band or EMF or something.

xp freezes w/Itunes

Problem: Upgrading itunes version leaves broken registry addresses/keys that interfere with new app. Pain in the buttewsky.

Uninstall the following in this order:
1 Itunes
2 Qtime
3 Apple support updater
4 Apple mobile device support
5 Bonjour
6 Apple application support

Clean and defrag registry (I do it twice--somehow it finds more dangling keys the second time).

Download and install a fresh copy of Itunes.
