Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Well, it's nearly a year since I purchased an iPod shuffle and pretty much that's been almost exclusively used since then on my frequent business trips to London.

To be sure, the single most frustrating thing is not being able to easily cue up a piece of music when the mood takes, but then I knew this before I bought the thing.

So last week, after buying - yes - an actual, physical CD, and ripping it onto the iBook I decided to charge, sync, and pack my trusty Gen 1 iPod, mechanical scroll wheel, scuffs, scratches and all.

You know what? I'm in love with my iPod all over again! To simply mull over the track listings while listening to something else... I love the simplicity of the Shuffle; it's 'chuck-in-a-bag-ableness' and utter determination not to show anything other than a green LED... but I was missing the interaction with the device, with the music.

Random is fine when you have an already established musical clique, ready to be listened to at the discretion of a machine, but new albums demand sequential play - not impossible on the Shuffle, but too much effort on my part.

My clunky, funky old iPod not only drew some looks on the Tube (it's a lot bigger than a nano!) but the battery lasted at least 5 hours! :D

Just thought I'd share that with you folks.

Thats cool

Just a couple weeks ago I saw some kid with a 1G. I asked him if it was a 1G or 2G because I couldn't tell by looking at it. He had no idea, then dropped his iPod.

I have a 2G 10GB that I still use regularly. And yes, some people with minis and later generations of iPods have given me strange looks. One person even asked me if it really was an iPod! I guess a lot of people think the iPod started with the 3G or mini and aren't aware of the earlier generations.

On a side note, does anyone with a 1 or 2G (and 3G I guess) prefer the separate button and scroll wheel arrangement over the click wheel? I find getting the desired response out of the click wheel can be a bit of a pain sometimes. I recently bought a 4G 60GB colour and I often have issues trying to get it to sleep by holding down the play/pause button...it seems to think I am trying to scrub through the song or view the album artwork, or simply pauses the song and won't sleep. And I still haven't managed to reset the 4G into diagnostic mode because of trouble with pressing the click wheel buttons correctly. I haven't had any reason to access diagnostic mode yet (other than curiosity), but when and if I do have to it would be nice to know I can do so!

I have flirted briefly with click wheel iPods and find them just as easy to use as the mechanical wheel. Much the same can be said about a mouse vs a trackpad. Over time the trackpad becomes super-intuative, enough even to play FPS games.

One observation though; because the central button on the mechanical wheel also rotates, it is easy to inadvertantly nudge the wheel a notch while clicking. As for the button layout - you can tell from the G5 that Apple had it right from the get go.
