I want the iPhone without a data plan because my campus has wifi everywhere and I would be saving $30 a month. Rogers said they can block data so I won't accidentally get charged for using some programs that require data. However, they also mentioned that Apple has some sort of automatically update that will use data and they have no control of it whatsoever. They told me somebody bought an iPhone without data and somehow Apple updated their phone and got charged with a $900 bill. Can this really happen and is there a way to prevent it?? Anyone here using a iPhone 3G without data plan and never got charged for data? Thanks in advance.

If you are going to do that, why not just buy an iPod Touch and a cheap cell phone.

This is the reason why I got an iPhone, hated carrying around two devices, considering my other was a Zune (great device, especially the $15 for all I wanted in music, but didn't feel like carrying that + a Voyager)

But if you don't want to pay the data plan I seriously would suggest NOT going for the iPhone, there's so many things running data that I wouldn't trust my provider to "block" it all.

On this note, my father and I blocked the data on my mother's and brother's cell phone so they wouldn't accidentally hit something (my brother's friend was stupid enough to start using AIM on his phone, and my brother was dumb enough to let people play with his phone) and was tagged for a small sum of money. But after the full block, you cannot send picture messages / video since even though they are considered texting, it uses the data for those services (but not billed for). This would become the same situation for the iPhone 3.0 software.

Long story short, I don't trust cell phone providers, and if you don't want the data get a Touch
