Vodafone to offer Apple's iPhone in NZ

Apple has chosen Vodafone to sell its iPhone in New Zealand later this year.

The agreement to sell the Apple iPhone for use on the Vodafone GSM network covered 10 markets around the world, including Australia, Italy and South Africa.

Apple launched its iPhone, a combination of a cellphone and the iPod portable media player, in the United States last June.

The internet-enabled iPod uses the GSM standard, and costs $US399 ($NZ515).

Telecom uses CDMA technology for its mobile network.

People are tripping over themselves and have put up 2x$ down payment to be the first....?

And Australia too. :)
Sentiment? People here like their Macs and their iPods. And their mobile phones.
I reckon there will be alot of teenagers torturing their parents for one. "How much did you say it costs???!!!"

People wont be lining up the night before. We don't do that. But it'll sell, depending on how nasty the price is.

Yes, Apple has a way of pricing everything up for Australia, and that is just sad. Currently 1 Australian dollar buys 94 US cents, but still we have iTunes prices of $1.69 per song. What a ripoff!

The iPhone I am hoping will be around the same here in australia, and then I will have to sell my touch to buy it, unless it is majorly subsidized by Vodafone (keeping my Fingers crossed that 3 announces non-exclusivity, and selling it too :D)

Oh, we will have door cuers too! The MacTalk guys will do the whole trip to the Sydney store and are hoping Jobs turns up so they can use their masks, and will be wearing jeans and a black shirt.

The general feeling from what I can gather (in NZ) is that the iPhone is a bloody expensive iPod with a not-so-flash 2.5G mobile phone attached to it in a nice-looking package.

In saying that, there's also an undercurrent of excitement, as I imagine that the first ones we get will be the new 3G versions...maybe.

Eitherway, it will be good to finally join the rest of the iPhone world without having to worry about accidentally updating your firmawre and locking your iPhone etc.

I doubt I'll get one, but it'll be nice to have a look at.

I reckon they'll be over $1000 in NZ unless VF do a deal where they subsidise the handset in return for a 2 or 3 year contract that costs the earth. Our data costs are high here, too.
