I can’t for the life of me figure out why some songs get highlighted red in a playlist. I don’t think more than one is highlighted, but I’ll look at the playlist and it looks normal, then I look again and a song is highlighted in a reddish pink highlight.

I thought maybe it was to indicate that the song is currently playing since it is always the song I am listening to, but if I switch to a different song, the same song stays highlighted. Does anyone know what it means and how it happens? I’ve tried several things but cannot get this to occur at will.

I’ve attached a pic of what it looks like.

I have never seen that one before.

I thought maybe it is a song that was streamed from Apple instead of downloaded or synced. That would not match your picture, but it was a guess. That is wrong.

Then I tried downloading a track from Apple that was not synced from my computer, and that didn't do it either.

I am still on iOS 10.3 so I may not have the latest version of the Music App.
Which iOS are you on? I don't see @connect so I would guess iOS 9.

The top left button does not say "Back" like yours does, so that is odd. Mine shows the level above the Playlist there instead of "Back", so mine says "Playlists". Not sure why that is either.

Are you an Apple Music subscriber?
Is this a Genius playlist?
Do you use the social aspects of iTunes (@connect)? Maybe it is a message from following that band?

Is it a Favorite song? Did you give it a heart?
Do you use iCloud Music?
This is not Apple Radio, so we can ignore that.

Maybe if some questions are answered I can check with a similar setup.

I'm on iOS 11.

I turn off Apple Music, I don't use it.

It's not a Genius Playlist, but it is a Smart Playlist

No Heart (I previously tried that as well)

I don't Use iCloud Music

I only have downloaded songs on the phone, no cloud music.

I will be able to look at this in a couple weeks. Then I'll have iOS 11. my current device does not have the battery stamina to put up with the additional drain I hear happens from iOS 11.

Is there anything to fix?

I can't reproduce it, nor can I get the upper left button to say <Back

From what the OP reported, the song plays, nothing is misbehaving, so what is there to fix?
How do you get to this stage? Step by step what is being tapped?

I know what this is. If you’re playing a song from an album and press the red writing in the player window, it will show the album with the currently playing song highlighted in red. Pressing the back button at the top will exit this view. If you search for the album through your library instead, none of the songs will be highlighted red.

More details:

Find a playlist and start playing a track
Tap on the playing track to show it full screen
Tap on the Album name in red.
The album opens with the current track highlighted pink.
Tap on back to get back to the Playlist

Even I get to learn something now and then.
