A while back, I purchased the Apple iPod Dock Connector to FireWire and USB 2.0 Cable (M9688G/A) to charge a couple of iPods I owned. Now I've upgraded to a new iPhone 3G and wanted to know if I could safely use (at least the USB side of) this cable to charge my new iPhone. I would prefer not to purchase another charging cable for my office and hope this cable will suffice.

Also, I'm considering the purchase of the Apple Universal Dock for my office as well (since my CapsuleRebel case came with an adaptor for this Dock) and was hoping to use this cable with that accessory.

Any insight on the safety of using this cable with the iPhone 3G and its compatibility with the Apple Universal Dock would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same cable and it works well for charging, doesn't give me the error. I have not tried syncing with it though.
