It would be great if the iPad could be used as an external control pad for Mac OS. It would be nice to do the following:

In Photoshop or other program, be able to move panels and palettes to the iPad so I can use its touch interface to manipulate controls.

Have the Safari bookmark list pop-up on the iPad to make scrolling through a nd selecting bookmarks easier. Once a bookmark is selected on the iPad, have the page open up on my Mac.

Use the iPad as an program/window/screen switcher for Mac OS.

There are so many possibilities.

Enjoy life!

So you want a $499+ device to perform like a $299 external monitor? Though it would be an added feature, I doubt that will ever happen. There will be the ability to copy over files that are more than just audio, video, and photos. There are even mouse applications along with a few other that allow people to see their Mac OS X desktops. That being said, you are describing advanced functionality in which a standard USB connection will not suffice (not to mention the lag caused by the interconnection of two operating systems through said 480Mbps peak USB port). It just seems like a secondary touch screen monitor for less than the price of an iPad would be better. It would be nice to have the features you listed but I just don't see it happening.

I like Gospel's idea. Maybe it's better to think of this as a remote control or supplementary app rather than an external monitor--in other words, rather than it being a separate monitor--it would be a control panel of sorts.

I could see various Mac programs developing complementary iPad apps that would speak to their programs wirelessly--they would provide menu control, or an external keypad for data input, or a palette such as Gospel's interested in.

No doubt, there'd be various plusses and minuses to that--and in some, if not many cases, it'd be better to just use the iPad!
