I sold my iPod 40gb 4th gen last month. I was recently loading on a song that I bought onto my new 5g and it said that I had to authorize the machine. I did and it said I was using 4 of my 5 licenses or something like that. The funny thing is I only have one computer. I know when I started using iTunes with my iPod I was on a windows machine. That had two hard drive crashes and I reformatted each time. I used the Winamp plugin for iPods to take my music from my iPod to my PC. I then bought a Mac. I transferred my music via a hard drive. I did lose some music along the way, but I knew I would live.

I am now concerned though because I don't want to lose my purchased music to some silly DRM restrictions. How can I ensure not to do this? I am curious because I need to take my PowerBook in and they told me to back everything up. Do I just deauthorize my music in iTunes?
