Hi everyone.

I finally broke down and created an iTunes account to buy a song that I just "HAVE* to have (The Future by Deep Dish) and when I tried to buy the song, I got a message saying "Please upgrade to iTunes 7 to continue using the iTunes store".

WTF???

Is there any way around this??

I really don't want to upgrade my iTunes just to buy one freakin' song!!!

Anything I can do??

Perhaps you could purchase the CD.

I know that I could do that.

My question is: Do I have to upgrade to iTunes 7 just to be able to use the iTunes music store?

I thought you had already discovered that fact and were looking for alternatives. I didn't know itunes 7 was required (never bought anything from iTunes). I only learned it from your post!

Oh.

Yes, as I said in my post, my iTunes says that I have to upgrade to iTunes 7 in order to purchase music from the store.

I'm trying to figure out if there is any way to buy music from iTunes music store without upgrading my software.

At the very least, are there any other reputable sources where I can buy mp3s online?

No, I don't believe you can. You have to upgrade. I don't have a definitive answer on why they do this, but they do. Upgrade or buy the CD. The other "reputable" vendors are mostly Windows Media--based which doesn't work with the iPod or there is always eMusic, but I don't know if they sell that artist. They have a catalog of mostly independent artists.

1) That's not true: iTunes automatically converts Windows Media Audio files to .mp3 and they play perfectly on my iPod.

2) I browsed emusic and a couple other retailers. I believe it was mp3.com who actually offered iTunes as one of the sources to buy from!!

Anyway, are you guys telling me that iTunes has a complete monopoly on the legal mp3 market??

Wow, I can't believe a simple track purchase has created such a dilemma. Drjones, it appears several viable answers have been spelled out for you.

Not Windows Media Audio files with DRM on them, such as ones from Napster, Rhapsody, and other legal downloading services that use the Windows Media DRM.

Apple has a monopoly on where you can buy music online from pretty much I guess.

If you're buying from iTunes, you have to have iTunes 7. Apple changes the version of FairPlay used with each version.

At this point, I don't know why you wouldn't upgrade- it's free, and most of the bugs have been fixed. Mine has worked near-perfectly since the last update. I still have some CoverFlow problems.

Actually, they're converted to .m4a, not .mp3. Just wanted to point that out...

Maybe it's a case by case basis, because I download songs frequently from iTunes and it's never asked me to upgrade.
