On the B side of life
Lately about half the time I'd connected to iLounge forums, I'd get a timeout screen (I have over 2,000 posts so I got pretty familiar with that screen!). I usually use Firefox, but the same thing was happening with IE.
I use FIOS (fiber-to-the-house), which uses a technology called PPPOE to connect to my ISP. Without getting into many details, it occurred to me (I'm very familiar with networking) that this causes some non-optimal network performance. I originally was going to delve in and change the MTU settings in the registry, but I found a program called TCP Optimizer that can optimizes a number of things. I've had only one timeout since then; overall things run much faster. It looks like it created some backups so the original settings could be restored, too, which is nice.
Just a suggestion if someone is getting a lot of timeouts. Just Google for TCP Optimizer; its free.
