Here's my situation - w/out covering ALL of my bases in terms of saving data (including MC9) - I embarked on one of those periodic reformatting the hard drive and starting anew (why it happened this way is a story in itself - but not a crisis thank heavens, all critical data was copied). Anyway - evrything's working, I've been reinstalling & configuring like crazy the past several days & now I'm realizing that I'm not sure how to go about getting my music files back into MC9 with the play/smartlists.

Some relevant info:
1. I had backed up the music files on a second harddrive - but didn't do any backing up from within MC9 - just copied the files over. I'm pretty clear on how to re-import them into MC9 now that they are copied back onto primary drive.

2. My ipod has the smart/playlists on it - and most but not all of the music files in my library. My main question is if it's posible & if so, how to keep these play/smartlists which now are only on the pod.

Is it possible to copy these lists into MC9 from the pod after re-importing the music? Are there better ways to deal with this situation?

Is my explanation clear? Any other info needed?

thanks in advance-

Oh, you're clear rfaison, unfortunately I think you're out of luck though.

Since you never backed up your MC9 database, you're not going to be able to get those smartlists/playlists back. Even though they are on the iPod, they're stored there in its database and right now there is no way to copy them off of the iPod.

So, short of manually recreating them, you'll have to start fresh.

Sorry... :(

Bummer - that's what I was afraid of. But knowing, I can get on with things & not spin my wheels trying to do the undo-able ... at least not here :).

One thing I discovered is that MC9 can read the playlists on the pod now since I haven't sync'd yet & I've made printouts of the various lists. I can use them to recreate the ones that I really want.

Is there a way to download your help file completely? I've cut and pasted a few pages (about smartlists you'll be pleased to know!). It would be so nice to be able to browse through it w/out having to be online.

thanks for all your help-

Ruth

Hey Ruth:

That's a good idea actually. OK, I compiled it as a .chm help file that any Windows machine can read.

Just right-click this link and select "Save Target As". Then just save it to your computer and you can browse it off-line to your hearts content.

Man, I've gotta update that thing one of these days, actually, JRiver is going to do that I think. ;)

Got it - thanks a BIG heap. Glad it could be easily accomplished - it makes your resource even more useful. And if you haven't already, how 'bout adding the download link to the sticky?

thanks again-

Ruth :) :)
