If anyone finds out about firewire capability, then can you comment in this thread. My 'ole laptop is still stuck on USB 1.0. The firewire has saved me days.

I'm in exactly the same boat as you kdogg. My laptop has USB 1.0 and Firewire external hard drive connected. I tried buying a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card but could not get it working with Firewire hard drive so ended up taking it back for a refund. Does anyone know - will I still be able to charge a video iPod with an older power adapter with Firewire cable attached? I'm kind of assuming this will be possible, but does anyone know otherwise? I only ask as I have several iPod "terminals" in my house all using older power adapters.

i don't mean to troll, but why don't people just look at the specs on apple's website? it was the same with the nano. there were way too many threads asking about firewire connectivity.

it does suck for those of you it affects though.

transferring 4gb with usb isn't so bad compared to transferring a possible 60 gb with usb. firewire definitely seems to be more stable than usb, and sometimes faster, so copying over your entire music collection using usb might frustrate some folks.
you also wouldn't be finding yourself wanting to put a copy of your favorite movie on your nano; they don't play video and a movie would take up a fair chunk of your space. since the new 5gs can play video and have large capacities, transferring whole videos is now an option and having to do that with usb instead of firewire might take longer.
time is such an issue these days isn't it?
i myself am slightly disappointed because i bought my firewire card for my 4g and am planning on getting one of these new 5gs. although, some of the disadvantages associated with the iPods using usb might have been solved, such as when the firmware was updated it would need charging via wall socket (firewire).

I think its an Apple design decision mainly to cut costs (as well as save space), so they could sell the 60GB G5 for the same price as the model it replaced.

Be it a good or bad decision, remains to be seen, however the people with laptops and Macs with USB 1.1 and FireWire connectors will be hurting badly.

At least there will be some stock of the old G4 60GB ones for a little bit.

I'm happy with my existing iPods. I am not really bothered about video, I use firewire and this is a bit off putting seeing as they ditched it. I don't think I'll bother with one of these...

Most likely, you will be able to use the firewire cable or a third-party firewire connector (like the Sendstation PocketDock) to charge the iPod only. No sync.
