I've had a 1G and then a 2G ipod since they came out. I've patiently waited for Apple to bring out iPod with Video - so now finally Im upgrading.

But What I dont understand is all you people who are giving out about the way apple has changed the front to have a thin layer of clear plastic like the older models.

1. it looks far better then the 3G and 4G
2. Its more practical - its one solid surface.
3. The LCD screen is better protected and less likely to crack

I think this comes from lots of careless ipod users who are used to a design that hides scratchs better. Well the new one is a better design full stop - just because your old careless habits are now leading to your new iPods or Nanos getting scratched doesnt make it an Apple Design Flaw.

My existing old ipod is barely scratched - ive dropped it about 3 times - but the rest of the time its been in its carry case and has some very minor scratches. nothing to lose sleep over.

If your ipod gets scratched - get over it. Use some Brasso and remove them! Ive done it 4 or 5 times and it always works.

Dont blame your carelessness on a company who only changed the design to accodate innovation and practicality not to mention asthetics. If you ask me the people who proably give out the most are the people who were given their iPod as a gift - these people dont value it as much and for that reason take less care of it in my experiece! You should see my friend Anna's iPod - she got it for Christmas and it looks like a bar of soap its so milky in color from all the scratches.

I agree some arent careful enough, but regardless of what you say they do scratch to easy.

I got scratches on the back of my ipod but putting it on a table (with no visible dirt etc) and turning it 90 degrees.

Thats not good enough. But being careful I have scratches at a minimum and have now installed IS so should be ok.

The Speck Flipstand encasing my mini looks like its been rubbed with steel wool, but I don't care. It gets jostled around inside my bag every day so is bound to get some scratching from keys, pens, etc. I like keeping things beautiful but when you're in a hurry all the time, stuff happens.

Know why I don't care? Because I can open it up anytime, admire the pristine, unscratched iPod inside, then put it back into the bag o' junk without worries. A great hard case can keep an iPod in perfect shape. I'm getting one for my 5G as soon as they're available.

Nothing can withstand everyday use without a scratch unless one stresses and worries about it all the time. I'm too busy for that, so I'd rather it be a $20 case than a $400 iPod. No disrespect to Speck, who make an awesome case that's protected my Pod thru thick and thin, but you know what I mean. :)

I don't think it's merely "careless habits" when people complain of scratches from the stitching on a case and other situations where there shouldn't be a scratch in the first place.

Yes, carrying you iPod Video or Nano in your pocket with your keys is dumb, but there are people who are being careful and still getting scratches everywhere.

yea well i think a product is unacceptable when you put it in your pocket with absolutely nothing else but pocket lint of course... and walk 5 feet take it out and theres tiny little scratches everywhere... but whatever i will get a case and i do buff them out. but keeping your mouth shut and not complaining to apple is saying there is nothing wrong with the product so therefore they will do nothing to change. from the nano and ppl complaining it got apple to at least give us a temporary case with the 5g so letting them know your not happy does get you somewhere, maybe with the next gen they will come out with a scratch resistant surface... its no longer expensive to produce and i wouldnt mind paying an over priced 10 bucks more to have a anti-scratch coating on it.

No, the complaining about scratches is 100% warranted. I havent even had my 5G for a week and I started to notice tiny little scratches so I decided to put the plastic sleeve it originally came in back on it while I wait for an acceptable case to be released.

believe it or not if you dont have like the 20 bucks for an invisible shield you can use saran wrap it works quite well if you let it soak in warm water then dry it off with your hands or a lint free cloth then wrap it around as quick as possible and when it cools it will be come tighter releasing almost all air bubbles. Or a more risky way is to put the saran wrap and gently use a hair dryer to heat it up slightly to tighten it but becareful cause it melts easily and you def dont want it sticking to your ipod that would not be pretty.
