i just wanted to download one movie to my ipod. when i ripp DVDs using a ripper, even a trial version i do fine. there was one trial where it allowd me to download 5 DVD movies. That did great! i downloaded another trial of another ripper where it gave me a choice of one. it did OK except for one thing. it's captioned with subtitles!! Why did this happen? i can't go back and do it again. Why did it rip the subtitles along with the movie??? i think the name of this ripper was "OpenDVDRipper" Can someone explain to me why it did that? i would be so grateful. I HATE having so many problems with this!!
all the "OpenDVDRipper" said was in the trial version, it would rip one full movie and then just half the movies the next time. It did not say ANYTHING about ripping the subtitles along with it. I think it should've mentioned it.
Basicly, it just seems the OpenDVDRipper just automaticly rippes the subtitles along with the movie.

You need to familiarize yourself with the settings in the software you are using. Once you find one you like that works for you stick with it. Many video rippers and conversion programs can include the subtitles. Some software may hard code it to the video, which is bad since it is almost impossible to edit it out of the video. A good program will add the subtitles using an overlay which can be turned on or off. Many players have the ability to show or hide the subtitles depending on the viewers preference. I generally skip subtitles since I have no use for them.

The whole idea behind "trial versions" is to...try them out & see how they work. You try a number of them & decide based on those trials which one has the right features. Then you can buy that one & know that when you rip a DVD you'll get the right results.

Sounds like you can mark that one off your list.

OK here's the thing: I downloaded DVD Shrink 3.2 in which it backs up your DVDs ...even the bonus matereal in to what is called "Video Clip (.VOB)" (BTW I'm copying and pasting from the properties where it says "type of file") The main movie is one file and the bonus features are another, but they are all in one folder. I managed to "rip" or "copy" some of my discs on there. It works i got the movies on my hard drive and portable drive. I can atch on my computer. My one last question is this: is it possable to convert a "Video Clip (.VOB)" into a MP4 Quicktime/VLC Video file, where it play on iTunes and your iPod? i read where iCoolsoft does it, i tried it, but it does not work. the size of "Video Clip (.VOB)" is 32.1 MB. that is very small.

Handbrake... It is free and works with ripped DVD files. In fact, you have to rip DVDs under Windows in order to use Handbrake.

this is gonna be VERY hard to explain but i discovered that i can convert with the YTD basic that i do have....but only part of a movie. You see, each movie that i rip is actualy a folder with all thes differant files inside. VTS_01_0, VTS_01-1, VTS_01_2, (etc-up to VTS_01_05) then theres VTS_02_0, VTS_02_1.... I think theres about 2 or 3 groups of VTS' depending on the disc. Anyrate when you play the ones in VTS_01 group, you get the whole film without interuption, no changing files. BUT when you convert it to a Quicktime/VLC/iPod file. Its only one partof the of movie. Thats the basic problem anyway. thats the best i know how to explain it. there's even a file called "VIDEO_TS where the DVD menu pops up and it's like having your DVD in the drive when it's not. seems a little confusing. it's just one of those things where the only REAL help i can have is to have someone actualy come over to my house and look at my laptop and see how everything is set up. Because this way beyond confusing to me.

I'm not sure where to point you since you can not use the best most common program. You are part ways there, the folders DVD Shrink creates is the DVD with out the copy protection. A good program should be able to look at the Video_TS folder and build the movie out of the VOB files. It's been a while since I played in these folders, but I believe selecting the right VOB file should re-construct the movie out of them all. HandBrake can do this and list the available videos, the 1.5-2 hour video would be the movie for example.

Again, it boils down to finding the right program that can properly read the Video_TS folder and it's contents and display it in a way you can interpret it on your screen. I would try to adjust your screen resolution to a setting that would allow you to use HandBrake. Even if you have to use some of the zoom features most operating systems have to allow you to convert your videos. You can always set it back after.

OK, tried Handbrake, adjusted the screen resolution...it didn't work. It did the same thing my YTD did. it was too stupid to recgognize that it was a whole movie. I PART+WHOLE MOVIE! Why can't a program understand that? the Windows Media Player (the only player that will play it) recgognizes as one moview, why can't these converting programs? I need to have someone here to look at it or take it to someone who knows far more better than i do about these things. i just need the money to do it!

When selecting your Source in HandBrake are you selecting the VOB files or selecting the Video_TS folder?

You should be only selecting the Video_TS folder or the folder containing the Video_TS folder. Then you should see a list of titles or chapters in the Title drop down box. Select the title which is the length of your movie then select your preset for the type of video you want.

then won't it also conver the bonus features too. i don't want those, just the movie. When DVD shrink ripps DVD the do the WHOLE disc, not just the main movie, so if just click the folder it might come out as one mp4 Quicktime file, but would also include the bonus features along with the main movie as one file. I don't want that. i just want ti to be just the same as the other movie files i got....JUST the movie, nothing else.
and the screen resolution was so big that it would not fit on my screen. some of the things poured of the screen like my start button and some of my icons. it was very hard to manuver around that.

No, it won't convert the bonus features. You would select just the main movie. Handbrake is smart enough to read a Video_TS folder and discern the difference between the main movie, menus, bonus features, etc.

You are also going about this all wrong. You should not be increasing the resolution of the videos as that DOES NOT increase the actual quality. I understand that you have bad eye sight but upscaling with encoding software does absolutely nothing to make the videos easier to see. You are taking a video encoded at 720X480 and wanting to drastically upscale it. That is only going to decrease the video quality. You would be much better off encoding DVDs as-is and then relying on playback software to upscale. VLC can apply smoothing options that are much better than upscaling the DVD when encoding (which is absolutely pointless).

NO, no! I don't have to change the VIDEO's resolution. the computer's resolution itself has to be changed before i can use Handbrake. NOT the video's. Sorry for the confusion. i told you this was hard to explain.

Have yall ever heard of Videora Ipod Converter?
"Videora iPod Converter is a free iPod video converter that converts video files, YouTube videos, movies and DVD's so you can play them on your iPod. The software, developed by the creators of Videora, can convert all types of video files (avi, divx, xvid, flv, x264, vob, mpeg, DVD's, YouTube, etc.) into the proper video formats (MPEG-4, H.264) that play on the iPod."
i tried that, i didn;t have to change my computer screen resolution BUT everytime i try to convert a file, it would give me the "Help" page. the only kind of help that can useful to me is hands on. and if yall do not know anyone in Cozumel, Mexico that knows about these things then i guess i'm just out of luck, But i really do THANK yall for your help. I'm just sorry i was not able to explain it better. How can anyone explain this crud? >:O

Videora sucks, there is no doubt about it. You would be better off changing your computer's resolution to the native number of the monitor and then adjust text and icon sizing. Using a lower resolution just causes everything to be stretched out, it doesn't make anything clearer. Windows XP (and up to Windows 8) along with OS X all have option to make text larger, smoother, and icons bigger without you having to make everything fuzzy and pixelated by using a resolution too small for your monitor. What is the native resolution of your monitor/laptop display?

Then use its built-in display for this. You aren't going to find the answer you want here as Handbrake is really the best, free encoding software for both OS X and Windows. You either have the option to buy something worse or use make a scenario allowing you to use Handbrake. The resolution you listed for your TV is still low. 720p models are at least 1280X720 but many can accept 1366X768. You should use 1080p (1920X1080) if your TV supports it. The drawback is that many TVs limit the resolution they will work with through VGA. For example, I have a 1080p 50" LED Samsung TV with three HDMI inputs and one VGA. It can accept only up to 1366X768 through VGA yet full 1920X1080 through HDMI.

Either way, you need to find a way to get Handbrake up and running as it is your best option. Videora, E-zsoft, Xilisoft, PQDVD, WinXDVD, Cucusoft, and all others either cost money to full unlock them, don't have the same encoding quality as Handbrake, and/or don't have all of the same features (likely all of the above).
