Over the past six months or so I have expanded my musical tastes. Once "Classic Rock Dan" I now have grown to accept (and like) more artists and genres. I suppose I have become less stubborn (yes enjoilax and sypher, you have finally won..). I've dabbled with rap (Run DMC, Beastie Boys, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest) and liked those artists, which are all Golden Age (no gangsta, I refuse to listen to that). I've experimented with 90s Rock (Oasis, Radiohead, The Verve, Jeff Buckley, Beck, My Bloody Valentine) and enjoyed it thoroughly. Some newer rock attracted me (The Music). I got into Trip-Hop (Portishead, Tricky, Massive Attack) which was a bit of a stretch, but I also liked some of it. Another genre that attracted me was the Rave Rock genre (Stone Roses, Kasabian, Happy Mondays) which I thoroughly enjoyed. I can't get enough of the Roses' debut album actually.. I've obtained a large amount of albums from the aforementioned artists. But the question now is; What other artists (and albums) should I get from these genres (and other similar ones)?

Just for reference here is a list of my favourite albums:

Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
The Beatles - Abbey Road
The Beatles - The White Album
Beck - Odelay
Beck - Sea Change
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
Brian Wilson - SMiLE
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmo's Factory
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
David Bowie - Aladdin Sane
David Bowie - Hunky Dory
David Bowie - Low
David Gilmour - David Gilmour
De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Derek and the Dominos - Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
The Doors - Morrison Hotel
Genesis - Selling England By the Pound
Genesis - The Lamb Dies Down on Broadway
Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Jethro Tull - Thick As a Brick
John Lennon - Imagine
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin III
Led Zeppelin - Untitled (Led Zeppelin IV)
Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced Leh'-nerd Skin-'nerd
Nazareth - Loud N' Proud
Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
Neil Young - Tonight's the Night
Ozzy Osbourne - The Blizzard of Ozz
Paul Simon - Graceland
Peter Gabriel - PG 1
Peter Gabriel - PG 3
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Pink Floyd - Animals
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Portishead - Dummy
Prince - Sign 'O' the Times
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Radiohead - OK Computer
Run DMC - Raising Hell
Rush - A Farewell to Kings
Rush - Permanent Waves
Santana - Abraxas
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Supertramp - Breakfast in America
Supertramp - Crime of the Century
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
U2 - Achtung Baby
Van Halen - 1984
Van Halen - Van Halen

Also, here are a few albums I have recently obtained:

Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Pearl Jam - Ten
Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
REM - Automatic for the People

For reference here are a couple artists which you may as well not even bother suggesting, because I dislike them:

All gangsta rap
Nirvana
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The White Stripes

And also a few artists I've been thinking of listening to, but don't know much about (perhaps some of you can advise me, if you think I will like these guys):

Primal Scream
Nine Inch Nails
The Flaming Lips
The Pixies
Sonic Youth
Belle And Sebastian
Soundgarden
Chemical Brothers

So what next? I have some money that I want to spend on some albums, but don't really know what the get.. I'd appreciate artist (and album) suggestions for the Golden Age Rap, 90s Rock, Trip-Hop, Rave Rock, and possibly even some Jazz, which I don't already have (you can check the link in my sig for reference to my entire iTunes library). I only have a puny 5,200 track collection and know there is a lot more out there for me to like!

Thanks to everyone in advance, it is MUCH appreciated!

-(No longer classic rock) Dan

Thank you enjoi. I've got a few of those that you suggested. Kasabian (liked them), Franz Ferdinand (good, but only a few songs), Bloc Party, Kings of Leon. The latter two I haven't given much of a listen to yet, but I will in the upcoming few days.

Keep the suggestions coming!

Music, mmm, tasty. Here are some recommeneded albums for the bands you wanna check out, listing only what I think is their best album:

Primal Scream - Screamadelica
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
The Flaming Lips - Genius band! Highly recommended - The Soft Bulletin
The Pixies - This is just about my favourite band, they're very meodic but edgy at the same time, I could list 5 albums for ya, but in sticking to a single recommendation, get - Doolittle
Sonic Youth - One of the best sounding bands ever, both Sonic Youth and the Pixies were big influences on Nirvana (which you dislike, inexplicably) - Daydream Nation
Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister
Soundgarden - I don't really like them, they're like Nirvana's ugly cousin
Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust

Enjoy!

Get the other 2 Rage discs for sure.

As for rap, check out Mos Def, he's also a heck-uv-an actor. Rent "Something the Lord Made". It gave me even more respect for his talents.

Also, someone that should be mentioned in the same breath is Talib Qweli. They do a lot of stuff together, and now are doing stuff together under the name Black Star. Both are on another level as far as the content of their lyrics.

Also check out the Roots. They are effing amazing live. effing amazing.

BTW, I like most of your library.

Oh yeah, and Franz Ferdinand makes me want to jump out a window.

Praise the Lord!! :D

If you want more trip-hop type stuff, check out:
Lamb - Lamb
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
and straying a bit further..
Prefuse 73 - Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives or One Word Extinguisher.. their sound is electronica but also hip hoppy..
Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman (trippy dub..)

Definitely listen to Gang of Four.. 'Entertainment' is an amazing album
Oh and if you like post-punk bands like Bloc Party, try Joy Division.

Dunno if you already have it, but if you're delving into rap, especially older albums, Nas' 'Illmatic' is a must.

I don't know much about jazz, but Kind of Blue by Miles Davis is incredible..

okay dan, a 'few' suggestions (check allmusic.com if you really want to know what genres they are) :D

Leftfield - leftism; rhythm & stealth...both excellent
Apollo 440 - electro glide in blue; gettin' high on your own supply; dude descending a staircase...all excellent
Massive Attack - blue lines; mezzanine; 100th window; protection...the first two are more acclaimed than the others, but i do like 100th window a lot
The Prodigy - music for the jilted generation is a fave, though i also like the dirtchamber sessions... fat of the land is okay
Buena Vista Social Club - buena vista social club...if you like santana then i think you'll like these guys!
if you liked definitely maybe from Oasis, then try what's the story morning glory...some superb lyrics in there
also try stuff from Keane (hopes and fears) or The Stereophonics (just enough education to perform or performance and cocktails) or Gomez (bring it on; liquid skin)
Thievery Corporation - richest man in babylon...though ginalee may have other suggestions
finally (for now) an aussie representative - Powderfinger (double allergic, internationalist or vulture street)
actually one more if you want golden age of rap...Grandmaster Flash - adventures on the wheels of steel

have fun :D

Mos Def's new cd... I wouldn't get it. Not that great.

Adding:
Murs - 3:16 (9th Edition), Blackalicious, Brazilian Girls, The BraveryCaesers, Cornelius - Point, Cunninlynguists, Jurrassic 5, Dilated Peoples, The Cure, DJ Z Trip & DJ P - Uneasy Listening Vol.1 (if you are feeling adventourous)

I'll second enjoilax's recommendation of The Futureheads and Maximo Park (who both hail from my area of the UK)

A band a bit similar to The Stone Roses (and from around the same era) are Ocean Colour Scene IMO. Their album Marchin' Already is one of my favourites.

Why not try The Stereophonics. Their best album is Word Gets Around.

You don't like Nirvana ? Fair enough. What about the Foo Fighters. Personally i prefer these to Nirvana (the drummer from nirvana started this group).

You will probably enjoy Sonic Youth and The Pixies. My favourite Pixies album is Surfer Rosa.

No Green Day on your favourite albums list ?
Why not try their albums Dookie,Nimrod,Shenanigans.

No mention of The Kinks either ? These guys rule IMO.

You say you like Oasis, what about trying some Blur albums. Check out their Greatest Hits.

Along the lines of De La Soul...........Jurassic 5

I second Sypher on Gang Of Four - Entertainment and Bloc Party - Silent Alarm also.

Ahhh but you guys don't know... Dan "hates" punk ;)
Thanks everyone for your help so far. I'll be sure to looks for a bunch of these later on through the day (and week).

And yes I hate punk. I should probably add it to the "hate list". And not even only modern punk like Sum 41, but also older stuff like the Clash. I've got the Sex Pistols and really can't say I like them much...

For years I have been extremely picky and wouldn't give the time of day to newer stuff mainly (90s - present), so while I think my Classic Rock collection is excellent I felt like I was missing something, and now have the urge to explore more genres and artists.

I just listened to Pearl Jam's Ten today for the first time and thought it was pretty good. Some good guitar work in the album.

Keep 'em coming!

Hey Dan :) I guess the best way to get you into a band is to give you what i feel to be their best song not just a random album and also the ones which sum up the bands in terms of overal style and listenability. Ok first off:

Flaming Lips- Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (part 1)

I imediately clicked with this song, almost as if i'd heard it before, but i hadn't. Anyway next up i think you'll like this song, i think this band is well worth at least one listen through, not only because you may recognize them from a movie you've seen but can't put your finger on, or just because it's good and easy listening:

Eels- Mr.E's Beautiful Blues

Last but by no meas least this is a solo artist i feel has come leaps and bounds since he was the vocalist in 'The Jam', there are few song i feel you should listen to, if you can't be bothered to listen to them all i've listed them in accending order, so just listen to the first one of you want, but your missing out if you don't check out the other two!

Paul Weller- Illumination, Written In The Stars, Hung Up

EDIT:Just read that your a classic rock guy, without being patronising, i have no idea what that means, (trying not to be ignorant) but if its what i think it is then i definately recommend one more song, please don't be put off straight away:

Muse- Butterflies And Hurricanes

Oh Oh i just can't help it, you've turned me into a giddy school girl & just wanna to let loose and spill out all my favourite songs i think you'll love, but ill stop now.

Anyway Happy listening!
Martin. p.s any kind of feedback would be nice.
