Yes, it will decrease the battery faster because the hdd has to spin up to fill up the cache. And if the files are bigger, it will have to do it more often.

Apple lossless will drastically reduce the battery life to around 8-9 hours. Reviews all over the internet seem to point that the 4G battery will get about 15 hours of playback at 256 mp3 (www.ign.com). I am getting about 12.5 hours of use with mp3's at the --alt-preset standard (192 VBR) using a random playlist. At 128AAC I was getting 13.5 hours of usage. I am not sure how accurate their tests were at ign.com

yup- the process is just overall more labor intensive. Had this happen with my Zen and it happens with my ipod.

15 hours? you sure they didn't test the iPod photo?
The initial review said 15 hours but it seems they did an in-depth review. The battery times were 13 hours and 21 minutes with EQ on and 14 hours and 31 minutes with the EQ off with mp3 at 256.

Here is the link: http://gear.ign.com/articles/585/585537p3.html

They also gave the 20GB iPod a 9 out of 10 which is pretty good. IGN seems to be sticky when it comes to mp3 players. They loved the old Dell DJ yet disliked the didn't like the 3G iPod judging the 3G iPod more on value instead of features and performance. On performance they gave the 3G iPod a 9 out of 10 yet gave the Dell DJ and 4G iPod a 9.5 out of 10. For them to give the 4G iPod a 9 out of 10 is saying something, they really don't like iPods.
