Order my ipod 22 days ago - still waiting... getting ####ed off now - but i digress!

What i want to know is - with normal usage what amount of video playback are you getting day to day? I ask because once i get my ipod i intend to:

Get up:
listen to music as i walk to the bus - 20 mins
watch a video or 2 on the bus - 20 mins
listen to music on the walk into College - 10 mins

Collge Time...
Perhaps play some videos to friends during lunch breaks etc.. up to an hour...

Going home..

50 min walk home... listening to music

Is this doable in your experience? How long does your battery usually last - and what are you using your ipod for during that time?

PS practically im not going to have it at half volume and no backlight all day, ill be flicking around the menus - doing a multitude of things...

For each day:
  • 40 minutes of round-trip driving (more if I make stops on the way home for food, etc.)
  • 45 minutes if I do weight lifting that day.
  • 40 minutes of video should I be really bored and don't have my tablet PC with me
Obviously I never even go into the red.

The music in your breakdown above isn't really affecting your battery life, but that hour-plus of watching video will drop it quickly, especially on the 30 GB model.

I listen to music for about 40 minutes riding the bus to and from school.

About 10 minutes listening to music before school.

15 minutes of video and 10 minutes of music during lunch.

So thats around 1 hour and 15 minutes a day. And at the end of the day I have around 75% battery power left.

By the way, I have a 30GB.

I think this negative stigma of battery life is getting WAY over-estimated.

And you should have gotten off your duff and went to an apple store...then you wouldn't be in this mess and you would have had immediate gratification...helps if you know someone who works there too lol I got $30 off

Hey Scott... thanks for the advice. You really know how to put a guy at ease.

Look at my location. Dublin Ireland - we dont have an Apple Store here - and every shop that sells ipods hadent even heard of the new video capable ipod when I went looking, I also looked around Edinburgh that weekend and nobody had one. Also I wasnt in a position to pop into the Nearest Local Apple Store - which is or course in London...

Thanks though - I suppose next time I will fly out to London to save myself 30 dollars.

I Got VAT of on the website - thats 21%.... I'm glad I ordered off the site, got a great deal - but angry it has taken 22 days to get it when al the time I keep reading you guys get yours in days.

Luke - :p

Did a test on mine the other night (Video 60gb) .. no EQ on , no shuffle on, no backlight on and it lasted just 10 hrs playing music only as opposed to the 20 hrs as stated on the Apple site.

Rang apple they are now coming to collect it for either repair or replace :-(

I went started listening to my ipod all day Sunday starting at 7am and it lasted passed 10pm. Mine is a 5g 30gb. I stopped at ten since I wanted to upload some vids but very happy. Please note that even if the Ipod says RED, there is still a few hours of music playback left.

You should get more than 14 hours of battery life when you play your music continously (such as using "Shuffle Songs") with the backlight OFF at all times, and not skipping any songs, or doing anything that would cause the hard drive to spin excessively. I tested my fully charged iPod and I got 14 hrs 20 minutes of play time.

The biggest causes of battery drain are the backlight, and disk-intensive operations such as photos and video.

Guys do not order from apple!

Buy your ipods yourselves in the shops if you can:

1. you get ur ipod instantly
2. you can return it to the store you bought it at
3. who cares about engraving anyway - all it does is slow down your order

When i ordered my ipod - not a single shop had even heard of the new ipod... 22 days later im still waiting and every shop around here has the damn thing. I realize most ppl got their ipod faster then me (6 days is the soonest ive read) but im just saying from my experience... it took them 10 days to ship the ipod - and im still waiting for delivery. Last night I phoned Apple and they said it was in customs in Amsterdam - its been there for 7 days now.

Great... nice job apple.

Never done it - but consider this - if you return it to a store - its instant, perhaps after a reasonable amount of explanation + hagleing... from the website it proabably require 1 or more phone calls - a courier to pick it up , up to a weeks wait then finally a delivery of the replacement... (which im sure is 2nd priority to apple after 1st time deliveries)

Hijacking your own thread, are you? What does this have to do with battery mileage?:p

Really? I changed my 60gb with battery problems without a hitch. And even if you had to explain quite a bit to the clerk, you're still going to be receiving the new one days before returning it to the website.

Btw, I'm sure if you tell them it's a battery problem, they'll probably change it for you no questions asked. It's a known problem and they can't test it.

Can someone give me a rough estimate of how much the backlight, 100% volume uses up battery? I think I *might* have a battery problem. (It works fine if you don't turn it on and off, in which case it lasts about 6 hours.)
