Well, I searched about this for my 30GB 5G and apparently no one's ever had my problem. My click wheel has gone nuts. The cursor randomly scrolls up and down like someone is playing with the click wheel. My fingertip doesn't override the cursor. Pressing the click wheel buttons still works. Coincide that with the "clicker" sound turned on,my little iPod sounds like a woodpecker.

I had an annoying problem before when I would hit 'Select' and the click wheel (scrolling) wouldn't work unless I started spinning immediately after I hit 'Select'. I still have the original OEM plastic protector and some saranwrap on my iPod (Ironically, my iPod craps out 1 hr after delivery confirmation of its upcoming case). I thought all the layers of plastic may have messed it up.

Well, I stripped my iPod naked I did the Hold on and off. I've reset a zillion times. Finally, I bite the bullet and restored the iPod (USB 1.1, uggghhh!). Still there. I'm not even able to get into the diagnostic menu. Called Apple, under warranty, and they had a return box at my house the next day. I'll keep you posted on my replacement experience. I just wanted to mention my problem just in case others may have the same issues.

Do you happen to have a cell phone reasonably close to the click wheel?
Maybe that explains the strange calls on my cell bill.:D

Seriously, the iPod has sat next to my cell phone a few times. Because I don't have a case, I generally keep it away from my keys, cell phone, wallet, etc.

Hi. I just joined up here. I just replaced my 4G Ipod that was stolen with a 60G black 5G Ipod. I bought at a local Apple store in Miami. I set up my first Ipod and everything seemed fine until I experienced the same or very similar crazy wheel symptoms. It can be dangerous subjecting one to full volume levels unintentionally. Mine was connected to my car at the time so the blast was not directly in my ear. I decided to exchange it without getting nuts trying to fix it. This Ipod was only a day old. I replicated the symptoms in my car in the mall parking lot so I retsored everything to factory settings and wiped the hard drive out. I went into the store and explained the situation to the salesperson. He said that in order to exchange it I would have recreate the problem there so they could see it. Of course I was having a tough time doing so but swore that it just did it in the car. As I struggled with it the salesperson stepped away and returned to say that he spoke with the manager and would swap it out. Unfortunately my replacement unit has also displayed the same problem once so far. This concerns me in greatly as the Apple store is somewhat out of the way for me to have to keep going back. After reading this post I did pay attention if my cellphone was nearby when my 2nd unit exhibited the problem. It was not. Anyone have any further info regarding this I would be interested in hearing it. Thanks.

Juan
