My dad will soon be in need of a new case for his iPod, as he has deployed with the Army National Guard, and is going to be shipped over to Iraq. As such, I was wondering what suggestions you guys might have for a case that would hold up well in a situation with a lot of sand and dust.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I have recommended to several people looking for a waterproof case to look into the Lilipod. It's water proof and shock resistant. If water can't get in then I can't imagine that sand would be able to. After he was done listening maybe he could take it and dunk it in a bucket of water to wash all the sand off. The one bad thing that I've heard about it is that you have no access to the controls once it's in the case. Therefore, if he wanted to change volume, playlists or just unplugged the headphones then you would need to open the case.

Hope that helps.

Check out these cases from OtterBox. They are waterproof (assuming sandproof as well) and look highly protective and durable. The bonus, you have access to all iPod controls through the case.

I am in the military(Air National Guard) as well and I will be deployed the the sand box in a few months. I picked the Otter Box water proof for my 60gig iPod. Its a really good case, durable and you can still use the click wheel. I love it.

The case came last night, thanks for all of the help. This is perfect for his situation -- the iPod doesn't rattle around, everything's amazingly well sealed, and the clickwheel works great. Overall, a great case.

for beach

When I'm at the beach this summer, I'm going to invest in a Shuffle...

Flash memory, small plastic case, minimal worry about heat overexposure / sand / wind / etc.

And if it gets stolen or lost, I won't be too upset. This would be just for the beach where I wouldn't need my catalog and wouldn't care so much about huge song selection -- I would choose what to put on it beforehand.

Also for the beach, a plastic baggie works well if it's not too windy. As long as you close it up mostly, you won't get sand in your ipod. You can also use the controls through the baggie. Not a good idea for long term use, but perfect for your weekends at the beach!
