Better Than Cats
So, it's that time of the year again. I haven't been posting for ages (yay college!) but a solid year end post is a good way to find music I may have missed or help other people find new music.
This thread isn't just for 2009 releases, but for music you discovered or rediscovered in the last 12 months. I'm dividing mine up, just for convenience sake.
2009 RELEASES:
Girls - Album - It's happy and fun. Pitchfork approved, too, so I can still fit in!!!!!!!!!
The Antlers - Hospice - Really sad, but I love it a lot.
jj - jj no. 2 - Good stuff. The girl singer is interesting looking. To say the least.
Sunset Rubdown - Dragonslayer - Spencer Krug can do no wrong.
Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca - I'll go out an say it - it's overrated. But when it's not gratingly annoying it's pretty awesome.
Elvis Perkins in Dearland - Elvis Perkins in Dearland - I've seen these guys twice, and they always put on a good show and I've been lucky enough to see them with superb openers, too, in Bon Iver and The Low Anthem.
2009 DISCOVERIES:
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes - I wonder why nobody told me about this album before. So so so so SO good.
Justin Timberlake - FutureSex/LoveSounds - I should be embarrassed, but I'm not. It's really good. The singles were always guilty pleasures, but I've overcome my guilt.
Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III - I got a subwoofer for my car this summer, and not much beats "A Milli" and "Let The Beat Build." I think he's super hit or miss, but when he's good he's spectacular.
The Tough Alliance - A New Chance - Really cool music. That's all.
The Dodos - Visiter - I haven't picked up their newest album yet, but I can't wait if this one is anything like it is. So good. So so good.
Outkast - Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and Stankonia and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below - I had Speakerboxxx/The Love Below back in the day, but lost it when my minidisc player got lost. It's okay, but I'm thinking older Outkast is where it's at. Stankonia is obviously a classic, but it's FASCINATING to see where they came from in their debut. It also makes me feel like I haven't done anything with my life since it came out when they were my age.
The Low Anthem - What the Crow Brings and Oh My God, Charlie Darwin - Cool sound, cool people, cool albums.
Jay-Z - The Black Album - I'd had The Grey Album since it came out, but I'd never heard the original. Hov's the man.
Cut Copy - In Ghost Colors - Dancing is fun.
Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage
Anyway, my year was shaped by The Dodos, Outkast, The Antlers and the Violent Femmes. Hope every one had a good year, both musically and otherwise.
