• With the number of recent threads from brand new users that we have observed in our Classifieds forum selling goods under questionable circumstances, we have instituted a new policy restricting new members of iLounge from posting new threads in the Classifieds forum until they have reached "Regular Member" status.

New users become Regular Members once they have made 10 posts and been a member of the iLounge Forums for at least 7 days. Prior to this time, members may still read the Classifieds forum, and even respond to existing threads for items being sold by other members, but they may not create new threads advertising their own items for sale.

This will hopefully help to protect our user community by discouraging fraudulent users from signing up and posting classified ads without having at least a very basic level of established membership in our forums.

Obviously all users should still exercise due diligence when making use of our classifieds forums, but we hope that this restriction will help to decrease the number of blatantly fraudulent ads that we have been seeing in recent weeks.

Please be sure to review our Classified Forum Policy for more information.

I'm looking to make a big banner/poster to put up at school, and I need a picture to blow up. I'm worried about quality if I blow up a little image to make a massive poster, but I can't find any on Google that are sufficient. Anyone know of a good place to get said picture, or does anyone have one? Or does anyone know of a way to make a little image look better in an impossible CSI-style Hollywood way? Many thanks, and trust me, this is worth it.

edit: I should mention, the best image of Mao would be extremely propaganda-y. And, likewise, any other images of Communist, specifically Chinese, propaganda would be good as well.

And, how big should an image be if I hope to make it about 4' x 5'? Thanks for all your help.

edit2: In case anyone cares, this is why I want it. Our cafeteria has these two massive pictures on one wall. They're pro-milk posters, and one has Hayden Panettiere and the other has Masi Oka. They say "Milk helps make you beautiful" and "Milk builds strong brains" or some crap like that. So, in an effort to be mildly funny, I'm putting up a sign that says "Help defeat the petty bourgeois milk values" or something with a big picture of Mao. It should be good.

It's a running joke Asians are lactose intolerant. I'd have Mao points to his tummy and go, No Lactose!

As for the pix, I would find the highest res picture of mao, say from a large format book, them have lotsa pictures. Then find a flatbed scanner capable of 9600 DPI (I think that's the highest res currently), that will give u a HUGE file then u can enlarge it further with Photoshop while maintaining reasonable quality.

Or if u have friend in the art department, have him paint u one. Doesn't need to be good, just funny. :)

Oh trust me, we know the Asian jokes. We have one Asian kid in our group of friends, and we always say we'll be sitting under the [his name] poster when we sit underneath Masi.

Your scanning idea is excellent, I'll have to give that a try. I also took some smaller pictures of Mao and vectorized them, which should be much more scalable, but also looks a lot more stylized. I'll have to see what my cohorts think. This is getting better and better the more I think about it.

Plenty of plugins that will blow up and image in a fractal manner so that it doesn't lose too much detail.

One example is

http://arje.net/rasterbator

Pity about the stupid name, but it's a good program. It'll give a "pop art" appearance to the image, but that sounds like it would work well with your project.

Please tell me you'll somehow give the good Chairman the ubiquitous milk 'stache? A Fu Manchu milk mustache, even.......
Nope. That wouldn't work. He's Against, not For.

I was thinking of the irony..... The milk mustache campaign as soft-core propaganda juxtaposed with an immediately recognizable propagandist...... Or, even Chairman Mao Got Milk! Or, the poster has been vandalized by the underground Milk Resistance.....

That juxtaposition is what I'm going for. I like the idea of the Milk Resistance though. If the poster stays up long enough (knowing our administration, it won't) I'll see what I can do about that. Pics will be taken, of course. I think Rasterbator does the same thing as the vector thing I did. I just used a site that gives you two free vectors and did a couple pictures.

Anyway, good ideas everyone, thanks for your support, comrades!

Haven't you heard the song?

"But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao\You ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow"

Sounds like a great idea... I'm thinking it's senior prank #2 time around here. Not stealing your idea, though.

Make as many copies as possible, then replace them at odd intervals and times. I did the same thing at work when a guy kept tearing down a particular magazine cover I liked that I had posted on my locker...I made 100 copies of it and replaced it...only about a dozen times. He wore out.
Pics will be taken, of course.
Excellent! I look forward to them!

Good idea, but.... This will be a massive poster. Like, 5' x 4' or so. So it'll either be expensive and high quality and we'll give it to a teacher after, or it'll be cheap and low quality and we'll still give it to a teacher after. We could always make small ones too though. Hmmm....

Google images lets you search on image sizes. See if you can find one that's "very large".

Small ones work well, too.... When the big one gets taken, start plastering the school with the smaller ones.......
you should distribute little red books with lots of "not-milk" to everyone and get people marching in unison :)

Mao is complete, and is awesome. After a trip to Staples, a couple of friends and I put him together in about 4 hours last night. We had to trim the margins of 42 8.5x11 sheets, and then tape him together. It looks awesome. We took it to school today and stashed it in our faculty accomplice's room. Tomorrow morning we're putting it up between the other two posters. I think it may be bigger than they are, so it'll be pretty sweet. Pics will be taken and posted tomorrow afternoon/night. I'm very excited.

This is the best of the pics. You can click it for a bigger version. It came out quite well. My friend is a better photographer than I am, so maybe he'll have some good ones later, but for now, this is what I have. Thanks for everyone's help!
