Hey guys, I had the same problem - right earphone.. First it started to crackle, then pop and then it died.

I bought my ipod from the online apple store. They sent me the new one. Took only 2 days.
I'm not having any more problems yet.
Seems like there is something wrong with Apple's headphones. Oh well, it's cheap, they can afford to replace new ones. If everyone does not have the extended protection plan, my advice is to use your ipod as much as possible w/in the warranty period to fix any problems that emerges.

New pair of earbuds? Or new iPod?

I thought it was the earbuds when mine blew out.. but since seeing this post, it looks like its affects third party brands as well.

But yeah.. I got my replacement earbuds in about 2 business days as well. They've been working fine so far. I'll be really curious if it happens a second time though.

Me Too

I was using a pair of Koss THE PLUG earbuds that went bad soon after I bought a 5G iPod. They crackled then died one night. Had I not seen this thread buried on digg.com I never would have thought the iPod itself caused them to break. And I don't listen to it with the volume deafeningly loud.

I guess it's time to exchange my iPod for a new one. It has a dead pixel too anyway.

My earbuds did that too. My Sennheiser headphones haven't though, thankfully

Shouldn't matter. Why the right and not the left?

I got a new pair of headphones and they're fine, I doubt they'll get affected - but if they do then this is obviously a serious problem.

My guess was that with TV Out enabled, some of the video signal was jumping from that third contact to the right stereo channel. Oh well.

I had Apple earbuds destroy themselves once, but IIRC, that was the left channel. I got my free replacements and it hasn't happened since.
This actually makes a ton of sense and I'd suspect that you're on to something... even *if* TV Out is turned off.

Consider this:

"In order to make your TV play back the iPod signal, you've got to redirect the outputs. You can't just plug the yellow RCA plug into the yellow RCA jack and the red into the red or the white into the white. No. Those geniuses at Apple send the video signal over the red RCA output. (Normally it arrives on yellow.) The sound comes through the white and yellow plugs."

I have a 3g, a mini and a shuffle. I have gone through so many pairs of headphones that I have literally lost count. My 3g keeps blowing the left earbud. It's blown at least six earbuds and I never listen to my ipod at max volume. I just assumed that it was poor earbud construction but you may be on to something. I mean WTF?

YEah this is my 4th ipod and it seems to always crackle on the left ear bud for me and the new 5 gen iPod earbuds the left one is starting to do it too; damn Apple, you'd think if you pay over $300 you'd get decent earbuds but no.

OMG, I mainly use my 60GB ipod in my car, I have the volume set to at least 90%, and it blew out my right speakers!!!!

not.

Apple is the company btw that puts hella short cords on their mice and keyboards, I'm sure that must save them a penny or something. So you get your cheap earbuds and like it!

Loudness

Before everyone hops on the bandwagon here. I think you are mostly listening to your tunes way to loud. And the right channel happens to receive a little more than the left. At any rate apple will send you (continuously) free new earbuds, shipping within a week. If you blow your own buds thats your doing.

Someone needs to run tests with controls.

This happened with my 4th gen iPod on the left side. It happened with my first set of ear buds, then I returned them and got new ones and it happened again.

I gave up after that because I use headphones normally anyway.

It only appears to affect the ear buds for me at least. No problem with any headphones yet and been using one pair since purchase.

The ear bud problem was a cracking noise whenever any kind of bass was played. It sounded like the cone in the ear bud itself was ripped.

I definitely did not listen to music excessively loud either.

Edit: corrected ipod generation

Are you sure that it's your headphones dying, rather than the headphone output on the iPod?

Happened to me on my iPod mini 4GB twice now. Once on the right side, then left.

Maybe this is related to the higher output volume that non-European iPod can reach? Mine is un-capped and I have to drive my earbuds at quite a high volume setting to listen e.g. to podcasts recorded at a low volume.

Same Problem w/4G, not the iPod's Fault

The same thing happened to me with the 20GB monochrome 4G model, though it wasn't the iPod's fault, per se, and the headphones weren't quite "dead."

The issue had to do with the 3.5mm connection between the headphones and the iPod itself. It WAS the right earphone that failed (one day, out of the blue, it just no longer worked), but plugging the headphones into a 3.5mm extension cable, and then the cable into the iPod fixed things just fine. So, in my case at least, the issue seemed to be wear-and-tear. But I use it at work for hours on end, every day of the week. If I had just received a brand new 5G iPod and this happened to me very quickly (and repeatedly), I'd be pretty ####ed.
