4th gen shuffle is recognized, but manual changes list is greyed out

Title pretty much says it all. Mac recognizes it's there, however I'd like to manually update selected playlists. Try to select manually update but is greyed out. I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but hopefully someone can get my nose pointed in the right direction.

What version of MacOS are you using? I am on BigSur, and I have to use Finder to see the iPod Shuffle 4th generation and I can see the "Manually manage music, movies, and TV shows" as an available option. This was with the Music app not running.

If you are pre-Catalina, you would still be using iTunes. Which should have the same options.

I initially had issues with getting BigSur showing me the iPod options, but a reboot resolved that.
For grins, I looked at a iPod Shuffle 2nd Generation and it looks to be manual management only, so that didn't really help much.
