Hi,
I converted a bunch of flac, wma and mp3 files to m4a format. I import them into iTunes and they play on my PC - I get sound. I sync them onto my iPhone X and it can obviously read the meta data because they all appear correctly in the default music player. But there's no sound, with or without headphones. I've checked that the iPhone volume is loud - I can hear youtube videos playing but nothing from the audio files even though it looks like they're playing - the equalizer is moving and the pause button appears.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

There are several things to check:
1. Is your Bluetooth connected to something (car, speakers that are off) that is not playing? Turn off Bluetooth or disconnect.
2. Have you tried rebooting the device? Power all the way off (press and hold wake (right side) and volume down buttons, slide to power off, wait, press and hold wake button, wait for boot, try again)
3. Verify that Do Not Disturb is off.

Let me know if any of those worked.
