When ever I plug my ipod in I receive a message from Itunes saying "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the ipod, then try again." Ive phoned apple and even they cannot figure this out. This is my last go at fixing it before I decide to ship it in for repairs. So if anyone could please help me figure this out please do so.

Thanks in advance...

I get this now and then. All I do is disconnect and reconnect again and voilá, iTunes recognizes the iPod.

Whenever this happens, how do you disconnect? Do you just unplug it or do you first use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in Windows?

Try the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon before unpluging it. It may update the OS about the status of the USB device and provide the connection it needs.

I'm also having this problem but I don't have the option to 'safely remove hardware' like I normally do with USB2 devices.

Any ideas how I can fix it? It's only happening since I updated to itunes 7.6 yesterday.

i have the same problem with my Ipod Nano

It worked fine for about a month and then today itunes wont recognize it. I called apple and they really dont know what it is, they tried everything. THey told me to go to another computer to see if it recognizes it there cause they said it may be a problem with Vista and the new Ipod Nano compatibility. I tried everything reseting, unplugging going into the driver on the computer, but it still wont recognize it. It recognizes my old ipod nano fine, does anyone else have this problem? thank you

Solution : An iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified properly.

An iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified properly.

I :D had the same problem removed all of the USB connections except mouse then plugged in my iPhone USB connector and iTunes found my iPhone again. Afterwards I replugged USB connections one by one and found the culprit my USB keyboard.

This all happened after I install a Windows Update that updated my Video Card ATI. Hmmm... thats when all the problems came.

Ipod detected but cannot be idnetified....

Howdy all. I was also having the same problem. I tried everything possbile the ITunes support page said to do. I reinstalled Itunes. I switched USB ports. I tried a different cable to rule that out. I restarted the Ipod. I restored the Ipod, etc, etc....

After reading one post from another area, I did one thing which turned out to be the culprit. The last thing I did when this started was install a USB printer (which was troublesome).
I simply unplugged that cable to the printer, and the whole ordeal with the Ipod was resolved!!
That was the only other USB device on my machine.
So, those who are having this error, remove other USB devices 1 by 1 to see if one of those devices is screwing up the USB communications.

Very strange.....
Now I am happy I got ALL my tunes back on the unit.

Anthony

Hi all,

I got the same problem.
Problem was caused by some conflict with the Belgian EID Runtime software, even when no smart-card reader was connected to the PC
After exiting the Systemtray application, the Ipod was recognised properly. :)

Possible solution

Hi. I found out that reinstalling ItunesX.pkg (/Library/Receipts/ITunesX.pkg) helps.

The only problem is, that this is a temporary solution as you have to do this every time you plugin your iPod. :/

First I tried removing all the USB devices (Keyboard etc) and that worked until I restarted my computer. Then the problem returned.

I then used 'Safely Remove Hardware' to disconnect the only drive I had (i think it was G:\) which made the iphone work with itunes no problem. I noticed that after I did that, 'USB Mass Storage Device' had the yellow exclamation mark next to it in device manager.

I found that by going into Device Manager and disabling the 'USB Mass Storage Device' it fixed the problem permanently (even after restarting the PC) and I could still use all my USB devices.

Not sure if I really need the 'USB Mass Storage Device' but for the moment things seem fine and perhaps this will give someone else a clue on how to fix things better.

I found something on the iPhone/Vista support area at Apple.com and tried it, even though I'm running XP. It involved restoring your Apple Mobile Device driver (the USB driver) from your hard disk. You do it through device manager, so it's not for someone who can't figure out the structure of \windows\system32. Let's just get to the root of the issue, v7.6 is buggy..

Ok.. after reading several posts regarding this issue and installing on several PC's to try to track down this issue, I found the root cause of the issue is that v7.6 is buggy. I tried 7.6 on several PC's with the same error both on XP and Vista. I then tried on my daughters PC who was running Vista but v7.5. Voila.. it recognized the 1.1.3 version of the iPod iTouch.. hmm.. so I upgraded the machine to 7.6 and toast. The device was no longer recognized. So, I uninstalled everything on the XP machine not wanting to blow up her extensive library with her iPod Nano by the way still works with v7.6, and installed v7.5 and presto, the device is recognized again..

The bottom line.. v7.6 does NOT work with the 1.1.3 version of the iPod iTouch 8G...

Try this if you're on a PC:

1. Right click on my computer and select manage.
2. Click on Disk management
3. Find your iPod
4. Right click on it, select "Change drive letter or path" (something like that)
5. Give your iPod a higher drive letter

This happens sometimes when you use other USB drives on your computer, like thumb drives. They take the drive letter assigned to your iPod. Itunes expects your iPod to be at, for example, j: but something else is there. It doesn't recognize it, or it gives you the "I've found an ipod in restore mode" error and you try to complete restore, and it doesn't work.

I have a desktop running windows vista. I spent 3 hours uninstalling / reinstalling itunes, reformatting my touch, disabling wireless internet, yada yada...

I left my micro sd card reader adaptor in the media slot. Because it was pushed in all the way I didn't even notice. As soon as I pulled it out it everything was and is good.

Another solution!!!

I had this problem, and spent the afternoon doing everything that everyone described. (delete, reinstall, unplug, replug...) Nothing worked. I am running XP Pro on two unique hard drives and iTunes would not pick up on either.

I was about to try the rename the drive letter trick. When I pulled up the iPhone in windows explorer and saw an odd file named "download" inside my image folder. The last time iTunes talked with my iPhone, my machine crashed while downloading a rather large application.

I deleted the file called download from my image folder, and at that very same moment, iTunes found my iPhone.

Go figure!

Thanks to the guy that mentioned the drive letter rename trick! :) As I type, iPhone firmware is doing an update. Life is good!

Hi,

I just want to thank you and let you know that I had this problem, but now it is solved. In fact, the problem was because of a program called " Power ISO virtual drive manager". The program creats virtual drivers. So, I just luched this program and disabled the virtual drivers I had created previously. Now....Itunes detected my iphone (3gs) properly.

I hope this will help someone.

Best Regards,
