Help! itunes only lets 100 songs onto ipod I have 30G before computer freezes

I just bought a Dell XP computer and I put itunes 6 on their and transfered all my tunes from ipod on to the itunes, had no problems, then I updated my itunes to 7 (bad move) So I imported most of my CD's around 2000 songs onto itunes and went to upload to ipod and my computer freezes, I've uninstalled itunes and ipod, restored, reconfigured everything a few times everytime I get to the point where everything is working how it should be ( my ipod shows up in itunes and starts to automatically update my whole library but mine only gets to about a 100 songs. and then my computer freezes and the same message comes up The drive is not ready for use; it???s door may be open. Please check drive \Device\Harddisk2\DR4 and make sure that the disk is inserted and that the drive door is open

I think it has some with itunes v7 because I updated to it and now I can only put about 100 songs on before the computer starts to freeze. I've even tried to do it manuelly and still the same result. I need help anyone out there. I don't know what else to do.

Could it have something to do with my ipod and itunes were on another computer?
