looking to pick up either the sony mdr-ex51lp or the shure e2c. money is no object . first importance is comfort, second is sound. all help welcome. thank you

The Sony's are seriously not that good. I got some and the sound wasn't clear whatsoever, very muddy....just not worth the money. Go for the more expensive Shures. I've heard nothing but good stuff about em.

I have the shure e2c's and agree you should get them. If you don't want to spend 260$ on Etymotics, which are better than the Shures, then get the Shures.
