iPhone 3G in-car aux + power adapter that works?

So I got my iphone 3g today and found, much to my dissapointment, that my long lived belkin auto kit w/dock connector does not charge the battery. Music plays through the dock connector, but I get a warning message that its not compatible with iphone and won't charge the battery.

Worked great with my iPod touch and mini, so don't know why the iphone 3g would be any different, but it is.

So, does anyone else have an aux line input power adapter that they found works with the 3g phone?

Thanks in advance!

Apple has disabled the ability to charge by firewire with the 3G iphone. This has had that effect on some car chargers. I am unsure which car chargers are affected, but I know that Belkin is one of them. I am waiting to see if it affects my USAspec adapter as well.

The exact same thing happened to me today - that adapter has lasted me a LONG time... Here is so far the best thing i've found...

http://store.apple.com/us/product/TR...w&s=topSellers

Problem is - i'm not sure if iPhone compatible means it is 3G iPhone compatible. And i also want to make sure it has an AUX in and not just an AUX cable running out of it. If only i could find it in a store close by...

Mephiska

yeah it doesn't explicitly say iPhone, original or 3g so I would stay away from it for now

There is a griffin model at best buy for the iPhone. I might go pick that up to give it a try.

Still really bummed about it.

I think i found what your looking at - but I desperately want a car charger that the auxilary line plugs INTO the charger itself, and that way i only have the dock connector connecting to the iphone like I do now. Having two cords plugged in would get really annoying I think...

i hear you, i loved having just one cord to look at. this:

has the belkin style connection, but no idea if it will work with the 3g iphone...
good luck and let us know what you find!

Yeah that's the one I saw at bestbuy that said it was "iphone compatible", but I didn't buy it. Maybe I'll go back tomorrow and pick it up to give it a try. I'm desperate for music in the car without killing my phone's battery.

Btw, I did find that my Sony iPod dock for my bravia theater system both charges and plays back. It only warns me that its "not compatible" and asks if I want to turn on airplane mode. But it does appear to charge it, and play music. I'm guessing that it might have something to do with audio interference in the stereo system through the dock port?

I sent an email to Griffin support earlier asking (about the NuForm case and) if that charger worked and I got this back:

"No, the case is definitely not rubbery. The plastic is very smooth, like an opaque acrylic. It's possible they have the case in stock at the Apple Store by now if you wanted to see it/feel it in person. We also offer a 30-day refund policy if you wanted to try it out.

As for the AutoPilot, Apple hasn't officially approved it for the iPhone 3G, so we can't officially recommend it. I can tell you that, in our testing, it does present the "not made for iPhone" message on your phone's screen, but it does work quite well."

Hope that helps...

I have a Kenwood headunit and used their ipod interface with my old iPhone. Worked great, charged the phone and all. Now it also won't charge my iPhone 3G. Looking into some kind of solution for this. I have a DDX-7015 touch screen headunit. I can't just get a 3G-compatible car charger since I wont be able to listen to music while I charge the phone. I think the newer Kenwood headunits use USB to connect to iPods instead of the old interface. Maybe this will give me an excuse to upgrade my double din stereo. BTW, this is the interface I have.

I have a Kenwood with usb connection and it's not a good setup for an ipod/iphone. It treats the ipod as a hard drive and access the files off of it. The problem is that the filenames of the songs are all garbled and there is no playlist support so unless you plan on keeping it random, I wouldn't bother upgrading.

I'm having the same problem as everyone else. The belkin was perfect. I don't need the extra controls and I liked its simplicity. Hopefully they will update with a newer version. Anyone found any other solutions like this?

Mephiska

Okay, so I bought the Griffin Autopilot today and it does indeed work. It charges my iPhone 3G, music plays through the dock port just like my old Belkin, and as an added bonus those buttons on it work for song selection, way better than trying to use the touchscreen while driving (dangerous! I used to do that with my Touch and the Belkin, I'm a moron 0

I do get the incompatible message when I plug it in though. Its the same one I get with my Sony iPod home theater dock where it says it may cause "interference" and that I should turn on airplane mode. I just say no and haven't heard any weird interference, then again I don't get many calls, so maybe I would if someone tried to call.

This is the closest I've found to a working replacement for the Belkin Auto kit. I've got 30 days to take it back, so I'll report back if I notice anything else weird about it. Otherwise so far so good!

This still is no good for us that have some kind of interface for our stereo. I'm not talking about just some Aux-In input. The only solution I have found so far is this charger from Kensington that has a pass through dock connector to use other accessories while you charge your phone.

Mephiska

Well yeah, that stinks. I was specifically looking for something with an aux port that charges. Apple really did screw those of you out there that require those special custom interfaces for your stereo.

There's got to be some way to just run a line into the stereo though. They don't have a basic aux input? My Nakamichi deck has two auxiliary inputs, two line level L/R RCA jacks in the back.

nsxrebel

Yes, my double din has several aux a/v inputs, but that defeats the purpose of the interface to beign with : to control the iPod/iPhone from the headunit without touching the device itself.
I'm not too worried about it, adapters will come out soon enough. If anything, this just gives me a reason to upgrade to a newer Kenwood double din that uses USB to connect to iPods/thumb drives, and video on your iPhone will even play on the headunit.

I was unbelievably angered at the discovery of all my in car charging accessories would not charge the phone. All worked like a champ on gen 1 but not 3G.

Alpine head unit will full speed iPod/iPhone controls = plays music but no charge.
Harmon Kardon Drive + Play = plays music but no charge.
Cigarette lighter adapter just for charging = NO CHARGING!!!!

That's near $400 in gear that will not perform the simplest task--- charge my phone. BS!
