Create a smart playlist with the criteria <Last Played> is after <XXXX> and use the following dates. Check the size of the smart playlist in songs and GB

entire lib XXXX Songs, xxxx GB
1/1/07 XXXX Songs, xxxx GB
4/1/07 XXXX Songs, xxxx GB
7/1/07 XXXX Songs, xxxx GB
9/1/07 XXXX Songs, xxxx GB

and post your results. I left the little table above for you to cut and paste into your thread. Double click on the x's and type your results.

entire lib 6502 Songs, 33.47 GB
1/1/07 1628 Songs, 13.66 GB
4/1/07 1117 Songs, 10.88 GB
7/1/07 700 Songs, 8.14 GB
9/1/07 53 Songs, 347 MB <------ hey, I have been busy listening to podcasts that I delete!

this tells me that I only need a shuffle. hahaha... Seriously 16GB is a lot of music. Of course you would leave some of that asside for podcasts that come and go, and movies and TV shows that come and go. For me, I think a 32MB flash would be great. I could pare down my traveling library a bunch ( who needs xmas music year round, etc. )

The strategy I have been using on my iPhone (8gb) has been to sync almost all my regular playlists. I also have playlists for my rating system. My iphone gets pretty close to being full if I load all my playlists AND 3 star and better songs.

If I had a 4GB iphone, I would definately be short. 8 GB is a little short, but 16GB would do the trick for me. Reason I won't buy a touch is because it is too close to the iPhone in capacity. Funny enough that I have concluded that I don't need that much memory since I would have bought a touch if they had a hard drive based memory system. I bet in a few months the capacity will be 32 or maybe 64 GB....

I can deal with just using a shuffle too, but there are times where I want as much music as possible so I can get a variety on that day instead of limited to <x> songs..and there are other people that are like this as well. I mean there are times where sure I'll listen to my favorites but there are other times where I want to actually find new music.

This argument happens quite frequently..it all boils down to preference. Most people can technically live off of a shuffle's capacity but its nice to have more songs that you can choose from rather than just your favorites.

Primary purpose for getting a Touch would be the 3.5" widescreen for watching videos and movies take up a fair bit more space than mp3s.

Entire Library 29,981 Songs, 177.82 GB
1/1/07 11,399 Songs, 71.30 GB
4/1/07 8,551 Songs, 52.82 GB
7/1/07 3,086 Songs, 16.58 GB
9/1/07 364 Songs, 1.88 GB

Not really sure why you picked those dates, but it's no surprise. I started off my life with iPods using a mini and significantly larger library, found a 60GB 5G just a waste of space, and am using a "lowly" 8GB nano. Using smartlists, I could easily get away with just 4GB for music, need a couple of more GB for podcasts & audiobooks, and anything extra could be used for video.

ragingSPAM

havent tried it yet but im pretty sure the results would be simiar...i'm just a stickler for having the best of the latest stuff... so since i got a 5.5g 80gb video im soon gonna upgrade to 16gb touch keeping my 5.5g but i dunno about classic because 80 is still plenty for me...but i could live with a 8gb video nano but why would i do that lol

My library is about 45 gig right now. I set my playlists up so that I listen to every song at least once a year. This exercise doesn't tell me much other than the pace at which I'm rotating through my library.

dmiZe

Yeah, this is how I decided I was goin to get a touch. I realized I don't need my entire library in my pocket, just the few gigs I'm currently into. I may get a 160GB classic for that purpose eventually though.

Surf Monkey

It's really a matter of listening habits. Sure, I only need a couple of gig of songs with me at any given moment... it's just that I don't know what couple of gigs those are going to be. In other words, I may be out in the world and suddenly wish I could hear some Miles Davis or some Kiss. BOOM! With the 160 gig Classic, there it will be. There's simply no way for me to know in advance what I'm going to want to hear. The moods and desires change with the situations and environments. Therefore, it's critical to me that I have all the options available at all times.

So post the results of the playlist from above and show us how fast you rotate!

Note I reseted my library before April
4/1/07 1193 Songs, 6.78 GB
7/1/07 726 Songs, 4.29 GB
9/1/07 88 Songs, 635.1 MB

I did another test in which I tallied up all 4-5 star rated song (songs which I actually listen to). I have a total of 4825, 22.52 GB of music in iTunes to which I only listen to 1339, 5.95 GB of! (And I don't have any videos). I rate all my tracks because I ignore everything that gets a 3 or below. I don't even know why I keep them in my computer because I never listen to anything below a 4.

I've been telling myself that I will never get an iPod Touch because I couldn't justify going from 30 GB to 16 GB. But according to this data, 16 GB is actually more than adequate for my musical needs of 6 GB. I can put all the music I actually listen to, and even have enough room for a good collection of videos.
