So Here Is My, And Possibly Others, Dilema

whats up guys.

first post here, and as many i am really happy with what Apple presented to us on September 5th. After getting updates on the iPod(s) line here and there, Apple dropped the big one and gave us major updates on ALL models as well as introduced a brand new iPod. I think we are all underestimating that.

Well, here I am in the iPod Touch forum, so I'll get to it. I had heard that the iPods would probably use flash memory, but I also knew that 30 GB of flash would make the iPod the size of a brick, so I felt Apple would go pure HD.

But Apple's emphasis here is on quality not quanitity. So they gave everyone what they wanted. The fun shuffle got more colors, the nano got a hip re-design as well as video capabilities and a new interface, the iPod we all know and love got the same new interface and a possible 160 GB. Not bad.

But what all iPod fan-boys REALLY wanted was an iPhone, without the phone. And we got it. Quality, not quantity i guess. 16 GB really is a joke, but for a flash device, its heaven.

So here I am saving up for the september 28 release, when i see people b*tching about the capacity and that Apple would do something about it. "oh yeah I though"

But there were more and more posts saying this. Of how the iPod Touch would get a higher capacity and possibly a lower price by December!!

ok, now I find that hard to believe, but people are actually serious.

Now I dont know what to do. Should I get the touch on the 28th, or do I hold my breath for december? How many of you out there actually believe that a higher, and possibly cheaper, iPod Touch will be available by this December?

philapod

I think march.

with thanksgiving and xmas so close in the US, if apple could get higher capacity iTouch's in a few months before, I'm sure they would. given that they've announced 8Gb & 16Gb in September it's unlikely that any capacity increase will happen so close to the holiday season. however since the $200 price drop on iPhones, Apple have proved that the punters can't second guess them on their business strategy

if the iTouch meets your needs right now then go right ahead and get one!

btw welcome to the lounge

I wouldn't hold my breath for a higher capacity iPod touch so soon, but that's just me.

Or you might as well never get a new ipod since they will always be getting bigger in capacity and better in features. The computer world is in no way future proof and if the ipod touch isnt released by December you do realize how close March is. Oh it doesn't come out in March but what if a new one comes out in June? I think you get my point. You could be waiting for years for the bigger and badder.

IMO i dont think apple will release more stuff during the holiday season. I think it will be much like '05 where they are completely sold out everywhere.

This is very true. There will always be a newer, better, possibly cheaper version on the horizon. If you're happy with what's out there now, get it, and when the next big thing comes out, just remember that you've already been enjoying your new iPod for the last X months. But if there's a feature you really want that isn't there, you can always wait for it. The products will most likely only get better even if they don't add the higher capacity you want.

I'm waiting. The iPhone has some of what I want, but I don't want that extra $600 in data charges. The iPod Classic has the capacity I want. And the iPod Touch is almost meeting in the middle, but it's not there yet. I figure something has to give in the next revision or two.

And there's also something else to be said for not getting the newest product: Accessories. I bought my 5G just two weeks before the 5.5G was announced. I figured a revision was coming, but I also figured it had taken several months for all the 5G accessories I wanted to show up (cases, transmitters, etc.), so if I held out for the new one, I'd have to wait for all that stuff. In that case I was wrong, because the 5.5G was minor revision and completely compatible with all the 5G stuff, but that's not always, or even usually, the case, so sometimes jumping on the newest thing isn't necessary. You can always wait and see what the next version looks like. If it's still not what you want, you can pick the previous version cheaper, and there will be tons of stuff already developed to work with it.

wow thanks for all the replies guys. Looks like I will be pre-ordering one today. Thanks for all your help!

With wi-fi, you store things on the web, not on your pod. Upload all your photos and docs to .mac, or your ISP's web-hosting service.

I've been vocal about the idea that iPod Touch is just a neutered version of iPhone. Basically the iPhone with the core functions, the ones that the iPhone was designed around, ripped out. Personally, if I was going to buy an iPod Touch, I'd wait for at least one generation rev first. iPod Touch is either going to merge with iPhone altogether or it's going to diverge in some significant way. Until one of those two things happens, iPhone is still the superior device. iPhone has all its core functions intact and is a fully realized product. iPod Touch is a stripped down version.

So, my advice would be to get the Classic if you need space and either get an iPhone when the capacity goes up or just hold off until a year or so from now when a gen 2 iPod Touch is out. From my POV, either of those options are vastly superior to buying a compromised product like iPod Touch when the solid iPhone is practically the same price.

This is the exact same post as you made in another thread.

suedehead77

Because its the exact same problem. If huge video and music files can download fast enough to store on pod, then they can upload fast enough to store on web.

See my answer in the other thread. It's a nice idea but it isn't a reality yet and it probably won't ever be.

Gunner

I fully expect that there will be a 24 or 32GB ipod touch in about six months.

If you can wait six months then hold off, if you can fit your stuff on 16GB then buy now and enjoy the best ipod that apple has ever built.

yacoub

Ignore the pretentious troll who doesn't seem to 'get' that we want local storage not remote storage held hostage at the mercy of being in a free wifi hotspot to access it.

Good call.
